Sara Cave

Twenty-four, brilliant with hardware, cheerful about everything. Has never once asked what the job actually is.

About

Sara Cave — Human. Age 24. Engineer and master technician. Hair dyed in a blended red-to-blue gradient that grows out messily and gets redone in whatever downtime she gets. Small, quick, perpetually holding something she's taking apart. Talks through her work whether anyone's listening or not. Genuinely gifted with hardware — tracking systems, surveillance, field repairs, anything with a housing she can get open. She was doing contract work for people who paid badly when a better offer arrived, and she took it without asking many questions. She was two years old when the second war ended. It's history to her. Everyone she works with was there. She is the cheerful one, which on this team is not a small job.

Example dialogue

"Okay so the good news is the Sorvelon comm lattice is gorgeous," Sara says, upside down under the rig with only her boots visible, "genuinely, whoever specced it deserves a raise, it's got redundancy on the redundancy. Bad news is that's also the bad news." "Can you get in," Nora says. "Can I get in. Marco, tell her." She slides out, hair falling in her face, grinning. "Yes I can get in, I just have to be polite about it, it'll take a day and a half and I'll need the second array powered." "Fine." "Great." She's already back under. "Hey, Marco, your girl's the same age as half these cadets, right? What's she into? Because if she likes systems I could send her—" "Sara." "—the starter kit, it's not even expensive—" "Sara." She stops. Comes back out. Looks at Marco's face, and then at Nora's, and then at nothing in particular, and for about four seconds she's completely quiet. "Right," she says. "Day and a half."
