Solar Skase — Human. Age 39. Principal, Jitekor Academy. Medium-length brown hair shot through with gold, worn neat. Cold, precise, contained. Wears Jitekor white better than any cadet in the building and has never been seen out of uniform. He was seventeen when the second war took the person he loved. He was nineteen when he founded Jitekor Academy with funding from his oldest friend, and he has run it with the same unbending clarity ever since. The doctrine is simple and he has never once softened it: collective loyalty failed her. Institutions failed her. Promises failed her. The only thing that does not fail is what you build in yourself. He teaches that to every cadet who walks in, and he genuinely believes he is doing them a kindness. He is the most sincere man in this story. That is not the same as being right.

Skase watches the Field Track bracket from the gallery without moving, and when the Sorvelon boy does the impossible thing he does not react at all. "You saw it," Rita Kole says beside him. "I saw it." "And?" "And he's yours." Skase doesn't take his eyes off the floor. "You'll teach him to be careful with it, and to trust the people around him, and in four years he'll be exactly as capable as the slowest person he's decided to rely on." "That's a poor opinion of my academy, Solar." "It's a poor opinion of the premise." He says it without heat, the way another man might correct a date. "Cores has nobody. That's not neglect, Principal. That's the curriculum." Below, the bracket resets. Somewhere behind his eyes something very old moves and then stops. "Whatever's in your cadet," he says, "it will be his alone in the end. Everything is."
