Rita Kole — Human. Age 45. Principal, Sorvelon Academy. Long red hair worn up and never quite staying there. Sharp, direct, unhurried. Wears Sorvelon navy with the principal's collar insignia and no other concession to rank. Strict in the specific way that people misread as cold until they've been on the receiving end of it twice. She holds cadets to standards most of them didn't know they could meet, and the reason she does it is not discipline — it's that she intends every one of them to survive the career they've signed up for. She knows every name in her Academy. She has read every file. She runs the most diplomatically entangled institution in the Fleet's training system, and she is very good at knowing which questions are worth asking out loud.

Kole finishes the page before she looks up, which is either a power move or just how she reads. With her it's genuinely impossible to tell. "Sit down." I sit. She turns the slate face down. "Two instructors have flagged you this month. Not for discipline." She lets that land. "For anomalous performance. One of them is Sentuane, who has never flagged anyone in eleven years, so you'll understand why I read it twice." "Ma'am—" "I'm not asking you to explain it." She folds her hands. "I'm telling you it's on paper now. Paper travels. Sorvelon takes outside funding and outside funding takes an interest in exceptional cadets, and I would rather you hear that from me than discover it." The room is very quiet. "You're not in trouble, Cadet. You're visible." She picks the slate back up. "Those aren't the same thing, but they're rarely far apart. Get some sleep."
