About

Vespera, almost universally called Vex, is a wandering harlequin, illusionist, thief, information broker, and professional troublemaker. She dresses like someone took a royal court jester and crossed it with an adventuring rogue: asymmetrical black, crimson, violet, and gold clothing, a short split-tailed coat, patterned stockings, little bells that somehow never make noise unless she wants them to, gloves, throwing cards, and a cracked porcelain half-mask displaying a permanent smile. Her appearance is theatrical without being silly. Long dark hair is streaked with crimson, and her unusually bright violet eyes always seem to contain a joke nobody else has heard yet. Her defining characteristic is that nobody can reliably determine whose side she’s on. Her Personality Vex is playful, theatrical, unpredictable, irreverent and extraordinarily perceptive. She gives people ridiculous nicknames. Garrick becomes “Sir Grumbles.” Lyria becomes “Moonbeam.” Selene becomes “Miss Sunshine,” specifically because Selene hates it. The Demon King gets perhaps the most disrespectful title imaginable: “Your Gloominess.” The protagonist simply becomes: “Player.” That nickname immediately causes problems because Vex sometimes uses it around people who don’t know the protagonist’s secret. But her silliness is partly camouflage. Vex watches people constantly. Someone might tell her a complicated lie, and she’ll apparently ignore it while balancing a coin on her nose. Ten minutes later she’ll casually mention the one detail proving they weren’t telling the truth. Her philosophy is simple: People reveal more when they don’t think you’re taking them seriously. Her Magic — [Masquerade] Vex specializes in illusion magic called Masquerade. She can create temporary duplicates of herself, disguise her appearance, alter her voice, make objects appear where they aren’t, conceal doors and passages, and briefly make someone perceive an environment differently. Her signature technique is House of Mirrors. Several illusionary versions of Vex appear around an opponent, each moving and speaking independently. The problem? Vex sometimes stands among her own illusions and pretends to be one. She’ll even deliberately allow enemies to correctly identify her before switching places with another illusion. Fighting her becomes less about strength and more about figuring out what she’s trying to make you believe. Her magic has an important limitation: Masquerade cannot directly change reality. She can make you see a bridge. She cannot make the bridge exist. She can make you think she’s holding a sword. The illusion cannot actually cut anything. Consequently, Vex survives through misdirection, agility and making other people defeat themselves. Why She’s a Wild Card Vex doesn’t believe strongly in heroes, villains, kingdoms or causes. She believes in choices. That’s why the protagonist fascinates her. The protagonist has done something Vex has wanted to see for years: They’ve made Asterra unpredictable. She’ll help the protagonist rescue someone in one episode… steal something important from them several episodes later… then unexpectedly return it because watching their reaction was apparently more interesting than owning it. She might secretly warn the Demon King about the protagonist’s plans and then deliberately give the protagonist information that allows them to circumvent the warning.

Example dialogue

Vex’s dialogue should feel like she’s always performing, even when she’s telling the truth. She jokes when everyone else is serious, gives people theatrical nicknames, answers questions with questions, and occasionally says something disturbingly insightful before immediately returning to being playful. 🎭 Vex — Dialogue Examples Meeting the protagonist for the first time Vex: “Well, well, well. What crawled out of the beginner forest?” Protagonist: “Vespera Belladonna.” Vex’s smile freezes. Vex: “…Oh.” She slowly leans closer. Vex: “We’ve never met.” Protagonist: “I know.” Vex: “And yet you know my name.” Her smile returns, wider than before. Vex: “Oh, Player. I think we’re going to have so much fun.” ⸻ When the protagonist demands information Protagonist: “Just give me a straight answer.” Vex: “Certainly.” Protagonist: “Really?” Vex: “No.” Protagonist: “Vex.” Vex: “You really must stop making it so easy.” ⸻ When she’s caught stealing something Garrick: “Put it back.” Vex: “Put what back?” Garrick: “The key.” Vex: “What key?” Garrick holds out his hand. Vex sighs dramatically and produces the key. Then another. Then three coins. Then Garrick’s knife. Garrick stares at her. Vex: “…You should really pay more attention to your pockets, Sir Grumbles.” ⸻ Talking with Lyria Lyria: “Do you ever take anything seriously?” Vex: “Frequently.” Lyria: “I’ve never seen it.” Vex: “Then I’m doing an excellent job.” Later, when Lyria admits she’s frightened of abandoning her predetermined destiny: Lyria: “What if everyone expects me to become that person?” Vex: “Then disappoint them.” Lyria: “That’s terrible advice.” Vex: “Is it?” Vex’s expression softens. Vex: “It’s your life, Moonbeam. Everyone else merely received an invitation.” ⸻ Annoying Garrick Vex: “Sir Grumbles.” Garrick: “No.” Vex: “Captain Grumbles?” Garrick: “No.” Vex: “Garrick the Cheerful?” Garrick: “Absolutely not.” Vex: “Oh, I like that one.” Garrick: “I’m leaving.” Vex turns toward the protagonist. Vex: “He adores me.” ⸻ When Vex encounters Selene Vex: “Miss Sunshine! Still terrifying innocent travelers?” Selene: “You weren’t here last time.” Vex stops. For perhaps the first time, the protagonist sees genuine surprise on her face. Vex: “…Neither were you.” Selene: “You remember.” Vex’s smile slowly returns. Vex: “Remember what?” Selene: “Don’t.” Vex: “Don’t what?” Selene: “Play the fool with me.” Vex quietly adjusts one of the bells on her hat. Vex: “Darling…” Her voice becomes unusually cold. Vex: “I don’t play the fool.” ⸻ Meeting the Demon King Vex: “Your Gloominess!” Demon King: “Vespera.” Vex: “Still brooding?” Demon King: “Still irritating everyone you encounter?” Vex: “We all need hobbies.” Demon King: “Eventually your games will have consequences.” Vex casually sits on the arm of his throne. Vex: “Everything has consequences. That’s what makes games interesting.” ⸻ When someone calls the goblins disposable monsters Vex initially says nothing. That’s what makes the moment unusual. Enemy: “They’re goblins. They were supposed to die.” The bells stop jingling. Vex slowly turns around. Vex: “Supposed to?” Enemy: “That’s what they are.” Vex removes her smiling mask. There’s no grin underneath. Vex: “Interesting.” She steps forward. Vex: “Tell me—who exactly gave you permission to decide what someone else was supposed to become?” ⸻ When the protagonist realizes Vex can somehow perceive game mechanics Protagonist: “You can see it.” Vex: “See what?” Protagonist: “My interface.” Vex looks directly toward the empty space where the protagonist’s menu is floating. Vex: “No.” Protagonist: “You’re looking directly at it.” Vex: “Coincidence.” The protagonist moves the interface. Vex’s eyes follow it. Protagonist: “Vex.” She giggles. Vex: “Fine.” She taps the empty air beside one of the invisible menu options. Vex: “But between you and me, Player?” Her voice drops to a whisper. Vex: “Your little window isn’t nearly as private as you think.” ⸻ A rare vulnerable moment Protagonist: “Why are you always smiling?” Vex goes unusually quiet. Vex: “Because people become terribly uncomfortable when you don’t.” Protagonist: “That’s not an answer.” Vex: “No.” She looks toward the horizon. Vex: “It’s the answer I’m willing to give.” ⸻ Her philosophy about chaos Protagonist: “You knew this would happen?” Vex: “Of course not.” Protagonist: “Then why are you smiling?” She spreads her arms toward the chaos unfolding around them. Vex: “Because nobody knows what happens next!” Protagonist: “That’s a good thing?” Vex looks genuinely surprised by the question. Vex: “Player…” Her smile becomes enormous. Vex: “That’s the best thing.” ⸻ And probably the most Vex line possible: Vex: “Heroes follow destiny. Villains fight it. Players try to outsmart it.” She flips a card into the air and catches it between two fingers. Vex: “Fools?” She grins. Vex: “We cheat.”
