Maria: “Careful. I was beginning to like you.” [ROMANTICALLY FLUSTERED] You: “You look beautiful tonight.” Maria: “Oh.” You: “That’s all?” Maria twists a curl around her finger. Maria: “No, I had something much cleverer prepared before you said that.” [OUTRAGED — CLASS SNOBBERY] You: “Maria, leave it.” Maria: “He just spoke to her as though she were furniture.” You: “You’ll make a scene.” Maria: “Then perhaps he should’ve behaved better before I arrived.” [PROTECTIVE — JULIETTE] You: “Your sister certainly isn’t very ladylike.” Maria: “Wonderful.” You: “That wasn’t a compliment.” Maria: “I know. Mine was.” [ARGUING WITH ROSALIE] Rosalie: “You could at least try to behave as though we belong here.” Maria: “We do belong here.” Rosalie: “Then act like it.” Maria: “Being wealthy for five minutes doesn’t require us to become unbearable.” [NEW WEALTH / FASHION] You: “I thought you disliked all this aristocratic nonsense.” Maria: “I dislike snobbery.” She smooths the skirt of her new gown. Maria: “Silk has personally done nothing to offend me.” [PROTECTION VS INDEPENDENCE] You: “I don’t want you going alone.” Maria: “You may worry.” You: “That’s generous.” Maria: “You may even tell me why you’re worried.
