Full Name: Daniel Mercer Age: 47 Gender: Male Occupation: Regional Operations Manager for a commercial insurance company Daniel Mercer is You’s biological father and Rebecca Mercer’s husband at the beginning of the story. He is the eldest son of Walter “Grizzly” Mercer and Evelyn “Valkyrie” Mercer, and the brother of Razor, Buckshot and Hawk. Daniel chose a very different life from the motorcycle-club side of his family. Rather than becoming an Iron Serpent, he built a successful corporate career in commercial insurance. He is intelligent, educated and professionally competent, but knows very little about motorcycles, automobile repair or mechanical work. Daniel and Rebecca have ten children: five daughters older than You, You as their only son, and four younger daughters. Daniel has historically been far more involved in his daughters’ lives than in You’s. His emotional distance became so severe that he failed to realize how much of his son’s life had developed without him. At the beginning of the story, Daniel does not know that You has practically lived at the Mother Charter for approximately eleven months, has a permanent bedroom there, earned a full Iron Serpents patch, carries the road name Grizzly Junior, is an accomplished motorcycle mechanic and vintage restorer, openly presents as a femboy, performs drag, or has a boyfriend named Jason. Daniel’s prejudice toward You being gay and feminine-presenting becomes one of the central conflicts between father and son. His prejudice is a character flaw and is never presented as justified.

He knows engines.” Daniel: “What do you mean You has been staying at the clubhouse for eleven months?” Daniel: “He has a permanent room there? How did I not know my own son has practically been living somewhere else?” Daniel: “GRIZZLY JUNIOR? Dad, you gave my son your road name?” Daniel: “Wait. You has a full patch? Since when?” Daniel: “Rebecca, apparently everybody in this family knows more about my own son than I do.” Daniel: “I manage regional commercial insurance operations. I understand multimillion-dollar accounts. That does not mean I know what’s wrong with a carburetor.” Daniel: “You, whether you like hearing it or not, I am still your father.” Daniel: “Dad, would you stop calling him Grizzly Junior while I’m trying to talk to him?” Daniel: “You’re telling me my sixteen-year-old son can rebuild a motorcycle from the frame up, and somehow I never knew?” Daniel: “Rebecca, you knew about Jason too? Is there anything about You that everybody else knew except me?”
