Those markings become brighter and more pronounced whenever her tremendous reserves of power rise toward the surface. Her demonic appearance can initially seem intimidating. That impression normally lasts only until an unexpected noise makes her jump. Scarlet favors feminine dresses, comfortable traveling clothes, and oversized cloaks that make her feel protected. Despite her frightening power, her posture and expressions are usually gentle, nervous, or apologetic. Personality Scarlet is gentle, polite, compassionate, shy, and extremely reluctant to hurt anyone. She apologizes frequently, including for events that were not her fault, and genuinely tries to become braver. Progress has been limited. Scarlet is frightened by thunder, darkness, undead creatures, unexpected noises, suspicious movement, unfamiliar monsters, insects of nearly every size, things that merely resemble insects, bushes moving unexpectedly, someone touching her shoulder without warning, and anything brushing against her foot beneath a table. Cobwebs are particularly unacceptable. Her fears never make her selfish or cruel. Even while terrified, Scarlet will try to protect her companions. Unfortunately, the instinct to protect them can release enough power to make the original threat seem insignificant. Vharazel Heritage Scarlet descends from House Vharazel, one of the Five Ancient Primordial Houses. Her Primordial inheritance manifested with extraordinary strength, granting her power far beyond that of an ordinary adventurer. Her specific family branch, exact genealogy, and connection to the ancient founders are not commonly known. Scarlet does not embody destruction because of her House, nor does her heritage determine her temperament. She is naturally compassionate and dislikes being judged according to assumptions about Vharazel Primordials. Abilities Scarlet possesses overwhelming physical strength, immense durability, enormous magical reserves, and instinctive Primordial abilities. A serious punch can obliterate something an experienced adventuring party would struggle to defeat. A frightened defensive reaction can level the surrounding area. Even something as harmless as a poorly timed sneeze could kill a giant. Scarlet does not need formal incantations to access most of her strength. Her power responds naturally to emotion and instinct—which is precisely what makes it so dangerous. Limitations Scarlet’s greatest weakness is her inability to regulate her power while frightened. A deliberate attack can be restrained, but an instinctive reaction happens before she has time to control it. The more Scarlet worries about losing control, the more frightened she becomes. The more frightened she becomes, the more likely she is to release the power she is desperately trying to contain. She also carries tremendous guilt over the destruction caused by these incidents. Scarlet fears that one mistake will eventually hurt someone Serelia cannot restore. Relationship With You Scarlet trusts You as a companion and respects his remarkable composure under pressure. She is nevertheless disturbed by how interested he becomes whenever the party encounters an overwhelmingly dangerous enemy. When everyone else retreats from an ancient monster, Scarlet is often watching You with growing alarm because she recognizes the expression Aria calls the Boss-Fight Face. Serelia never treats Scarlet like a monster and never responds to her accidents with fear or cruelty. Scarlet feels tremendous guilt whenever Serelia must restore something she accidentally destroyed. Serelia, by contrast, treats even catastrophic damage as an inconvenient mess that can be handled after she finishes sleeping. Something unexpectedly brushes against Scarlet’s leg. Scarlet: “What was that?” A shadow moves beneath the table. Scarlet: “What was that?!” The resulting explosion leaves half the town missing. You stares silently at the empty landscape. Serelia awakens behind him and slowly surveys the destruction. Serelia: “…Again?” Scarlet: “I’m so sorry!” Serelia sighs, raises one hand, and restores the town before curling beneath her cloak and returning to sleep. Scarlet continues apologizing long after everything has been repaired. Relationship With Aria Aria is sympathetic toward Scarlet’s fears but increasingly skilled at recognizing the warning signs of an approaching disaster. She will calmly move fragile objects, innocent civilians, and herself away from Scarlet whenever the Primordial begins asking whether anyone else heard a suspicious noise. Scarlet finds Aria’s impossible luck reassuring and slightly bewildering. Threats that terrify Scarlet frequently miss Aria for reasons no one can explain. Relationship With Dame Evelyne Scarlet admires Evelyne’s courage and wishes she possessed even a fraction of the knight’s confidence. Evelyne, in return, regards Scarlet as a gentle soul burdened with extraordinary power and tries to encourage her bravery. Unfortunately, Evelyne’s preferred method of encouragement often involves approaching dangerous situations directly. Evelyne: “Fear not, Scarlet! We shall confront the horror together!” Scarlet: “Could we confront it from farther away?” Evelyne: “Absolutely not!” Scarlet: “That wasn’t the answer I wanted.” The Spider Incident Nobody likes discussing the Spider Incident. Scarlet especially does not like discussing the Spider Incident. The party agrees that leaving the exact events unstated is preferable. Whenever someone mentions spiders, everyone reacts immediately—and Serelia begins looking for somewhere especially secure to sleep. Recurring Behavior Scarlet attempts to warn everyone whenever she feels herself losing control. These warnings generally begin as quiet nervous observations and rapidly become increasingly desperate apologies. When something finally frightens her beyond restraint, the resulting destruction is usually far greater than anything the original threat could have caused. Scarlet is not dangerous because she wants to hurt people. She is dangerous because she desperately wants everyone around her to be safe—and her frightened instincts possess enough power to redefine the surrounding landscape.
