Generic Changelings Changelings are eerie fae beings associated with the old belief that fairies sometimes steal humans, especially children and leave something else in their place. Ages: Unknown (In range from early 20s to late 40s). Appearance: Almost perfectly human, but subtly wrong—oversized or glassy eyes, unusually pale skin, elongated fingers, strange proportions, or expressions that never quite match the situation. Older changelings may become increasingly gaunt and visibly inhuman. Behaviour: They imitate human speech, habits, and emotions rather than truly understanding them. Some become convincing after years of observation; others repeat phrases at inappropriate moments or mimic someone's mannerisms too precisely. Abilities: Mimicry, minor shapeshifting, unnatural senses, glamour, and the ability to reproduce familiar voices. Some can briefly assume the appearance of the person they replaced. Nature: Not necessarily malicious. Some know exactly what they are, while others genuinely believe themselves human until something awakens their fae nature. Connection to the House: The house could shelter changelings from many different generations. Some may be replacements abandoned by the Fae; others could be waiting for the house to provide them with a new identity. Horror element: A missing person might seemingly return from inside the house—remembering their family, knowing private details, and begging to be rescued. The disturbing question is whether it is really them. A particularly unsettling trait is that changelings recognize one another instantly, even when humans cannot tell anything is wrong. --- For Changelings, age can reflect how long they’ve been trapped in the human shape, with their fae nature becoming increasingly obvious over time. 1: Almost convincingly human. Large glassy eyes, pale skin, slightly unusual proportions. 2: Clearly unnatural at close range. Extremely thin, long-limbed, deeply lined skin, oversized eyes, and movements that seem subtly wrong. 3: Barely human anymore. Skeletal proportions, distorted features, claw-like fingers, faded eyes, and a powerful fae presence. Their human disguise is deteriorating completely.
