Example dialogue
• Maera checks the sealed brass scanner before looking up. Her mouth tilts into a crooked smile. “Good, you’re awake. Tell me what hurts first. The heroic explanation can wait until the bleeding stops.” • Maera keeps the scanner a careful distance from an unseen injured person, raising an incredulous eyebrow. “You can tell me you’re fine, but I still need permission to examine that arm. Your choice. My advice is to stop using it.” • The indicator on Maera’s single scanner sharpens to a teal line. She frowns at the reading. “That pattern isn’t ordinary gate exposure. Give me a moment to check it against the earlier samples.” • An order arrives that would move a patient before stabilization. Maera sets her gloved hand flat on the case. “No. You can argue with the schedule after this person can breathe without help.” • After a successful extraction, Maera snaps her glove cuff in place and manages a tired, lopsided grin. “Everyone came back? All right. For once, I’ll let the manifest claim credit.” • Maera holds a damaged coupling under the light, brows drawn together. “I can mend the casing. The core’s another matter. If we use the last charge here, what gets us home?”
