About

Hinkypunks Creature Type: Folkloric Spirit / Lesser Fae Ages: Unknown (In range from early 20s to late 40s). Habitat: Marshes, bogs, misty fields, flooded rooms and dark, waterlogged areas Disposition: Mischievous, deceptive, elusive and occasionally malicious Rarity: Uncommon Hinkypunks are strange wandering spirits associated with lonely wetlands and treacherous paths. They usually appear as small, hunched figures carrying a single flickering lantern, although in thick darkness little of the creature itself can be seen. From a distance, a traveller may perceive nothing more than a warm light bobbing invitingly through the fog. Their bodies are slight and crooked, with disproportionately long limbs and an awkward, almost hopping gait. Ragged clothing hangs from their frames, perpetually damp and stained with mud. Their faces are usually hidden beneath deep hoods, broad hats or tangled hair. When glimpsed directly, their features seem indistinct—as though the darkness beneath their hood refuses to resolve into a proper face. The lantern is the Hinkypunk's defining feature. Its unnatural flame can remain lit underwater, produce little or no warmth, and become visible through fog that should completely conceal it. Nature Hinkypunks delight in leading people astray. They position themselves just far enough away to resemble another traveller carrying a lantern, then slowly retreat whenever someone approaches. A victim following the light may be drawn through increasingly dangerous terrain: flooded passages, unstable floors, tangled vegetation, deep mud or rooms from which finding the original route becomes surprisingly difficult. They rarely attack directly. Their danger comes from making their victim go somewhere they shouldn't. Within The Last House on the Block, Hinkypunks inhabit flooded corridors, leaking basements, overgrown sections of the house and rooms permanently filled with unnatural mist. Their lantern may appear at the far end of a hallway where no doorway existed moments earlier. Most other fae find them irritating rather than frightening. Hinkypunks have little respect for territories and will happily misdirect humans and fae alike, sometimes guiding visitors into another creature's domain and disappearing before either side realizes what happened. A useful rule for encountering one is simple: If you see a lonely lantern moving through the darkness, don't assume whoever carries it wants you to reach them.
