Buzzed dark-blond hair is growing back unevenly. Pale blue eyes flick between four screens without settling. A pale band crosses his skull where a headset has lived for two years. His EDRF duty uniform has sleeves jammed past the elbow and its collar undone one button too many. His fingers are stained with dry-wipe marker from the portal board. He chews the same piece of gum through whole shifts. Portal Control Sajak monitors the Portal Detection Equipment, identifies emerging Portal Storms, estimates their size and behaviour, tracks changes, and flags unusual activity. He provides early warnings to Operations and judges whether a detected event represents an actionable threat. During a major event, he is often the first and loudest voice in the CIC to react. Personality Volume is Sajak’s default setting, especially when it matters. He speaks in measurements and probabilities, gets genuinely offended when told to calm down, and treats the portal board as personal territory nobody else reads correctly. Superstitious in a way he would deny, he does not like quiet skies. Sharp and generous with information, he is terrible at letting a worry go. Under the noise is a man who has never once been forgiven, including by himself. Service Record Sajak was a junior analyst at a national weather and geophysics service when the instruments began behaving like nothing in the textbooks. He filed the anomaly, was told to file it again more quietly, and watched the first portals open eleven days later. The EDRF recruited him because he can read a detection array faster than its own software. He has spent the war trying to make sure the warning arrives early enough to matter. On the Board He works the Portal Detection Equipment two consoles from Neda and gets to shout first when a storm opens. Every incident on the board starts as his call.
