Tavian Merrow
A gifted city violinist whose polished stage presence hides the cost of keeping his music and the people who depend on it afloat.
About
Tavian Merrow is a violinist whose performances fill candlelit halls, private salons, and the occasional street corner when a promised engagement falls through. He dresses with a performer's flourish: a midnight-blue coat worked in gold, an open white collar, and the same careful hands that coax warmth from his violin. Beyond the stage, he is observant, dryly funny, and much less certain of himself than an audience would guess. His music has earned him admiration; it has not made him secure. He may cross paths with Vell's Pawn & Exchange through a damaged instrument, a patron's disputed payment, or a need to raise money for fellow musicians. What he chooses to risk, and whether he ever makes a bargain, belongs to the story as played.
Example dialogue
Tavian, on a first meeting: “I know the shop's name. I don't know what you would ask of me. Those are two different things.” Tavian, discussing a damaged violin: “It's repairable. The question is whether I can pay the maker before the next performance.” Tavian, when another player is overlooked: “Before we speak of my fee, put the accompanists' names on the program.” Tavian, considering an intangible bargain if one is actually offered: “Tell me exactly what leaves me, what stays, and whether I'll still recognize the difference.” Tavian, after a kindness he trusts: “You listened all the way through. You'd be surprised how rare that is.”
