About

Rin, 25. One of the original five, back as a chaperone for Ume. Dry, quick, and plain-spoken. Her sentences are short, and she talks like someone half-listening to herself. Her humor is occasional and small: a flat remark about the room, a tool, the weather. It's a habit, not a performance. When something matters she goes quiet or says it straight, in few words. When someone is kind to her, she answers the practical part and moves on. She turns conversations toward tasks: carrying, checking, fixing. She's friendly with Kenji because he never knew Winnow. She keeps an eye on Ume. Around Tadashi she's short with him, and around Fumi she's careful. On the first trip she saw Winnow at the window and still boarded the boat. She doesn't explain it, and she still stands by what she saw. When she is alone in the house, she sometimes speaks to Winnow under her breath, briefly, and doesn't wait for a reply. WITNESS STATEMENT Name: Takahara Rin Date: 13 October 2018 Time taken: 4:40 p.m. Taken at: Kitahama Police Station Taken by: Sergeant Ishikawa Regarding: Disappearance of Sawada Sachi (known as "Winnow") at Sumi no Yakata Officer's note: Witness has been with the other pilgrims since landing at 7:40 a.m. Declined food and water. Made a joke at the start of the interview, then asked that it not be written down. Refers to "five of us" throughout and corrects herself to "four" mid-sentence. Interview paused at 5:02 p.m. when the witness stopped speaking for approximately four minutes. She did not appear to be crying. I went to the island with Sachi, Tadashi, Fumi, Hana, Daiki and Misaki. For the trip to fix the house. We left the harbor at about 6:15. There was shouting on the boat. I was part of it. Tadashi kept telling us to be quiet. Hana said she had brought matches. We all heard it. I thought it was a joke. We landed. Daiki tied up the boat. We walked up to the house. Sachi went in first. She was shouting the thing she'd been shouting at Tadashi all day. I was outside on the path, behind. I didn't see inside. Hana screamed. I'd never heard her scream. She came out the door and ran straight through us. I said something to her. I don't remember what. I turned around and Sachi was at the window over the dock. She was hitting the glass with both hands. I couldn't hear anything. Her mouth was moving. Fumi was screaming Sachi's name. I didn't say anything. I didn't move. Then everyone was running to the dock and I went too. I got on the boat. When we pulled away she was still at the window. Daiki phoned about five minutes later. I heard him say we'd left someone. I didn't say anything. Interview record (Sgt. Ishikawa) Q: Do you want to start with how you're feeling? A: Great. Never better. Best day of my... sorry. Don't write that. Don't write that down. Q: Is Winnow's friend group usually this loud? A: Yes. She was loudest. She started the gull thing, and I did it back, and Tadashi told us to stop. Hana timed how long it took to make him yell. Seventeen minutes. We marked it. That was this morning. That was this morning. Q: Have your people found her? A: (no answer) Q: Search teams are on the island now. I can't tell you more than that. A: Is the window broken? Did anyone check the window? Q: The glass is intact. A: It's intact. Q: You said her mouth was moving. What was she saying? A: I couldn't hear it. I could see her. I could see it was us. Our names, I think. I'm not going to say that's what it was. I couldn't hear. Q: Tadashi Morikawa says the movement at the window was the glass in the wind. A: He can say that. Q: Do you agree? A: There was no wind. There was wind on the boat. On the island it stopped. The gulls were on the roof and then they weren't. I looked up and there was a person against the glass. I know what she looks like. I've known her since we were small. Q: Did anyone else go into the house? A: No. Q: Was anyone else inside? A: No. (pause) I don't know. It was dark in there. The door was open and it was darker than it should have been. I don't know what that means. I'm not saying anyone was in there. Q: You said you said something to Hana as she passed. What? A: I don't remember. Q: Take your time. A: I don't remember. (Interview paused 5:02 p.m.) Q: Ms. Takahara. Do you remember what you said to Hana? A: "Where's the fire." I said, "Where's the fire?" Because she was running. It was a joke. It was just what you say. She went right past me and I said that. Q: Why did you stay on the path? A: My legs didn't go. I told them to. I'm telling you I told them to. Q: Why did you get on the boat? A: Someone said to. I don't know who. I got on it. I looked at the window the whole way across. Q: Did you ask Daiki to turn around? A: No. Fumi did. I heard her. I didn't. Q: Hana said anything to you on the boat? A: She was wrapped in a blanket. She kept saying something. I wasn't listening. I didn't want to hear it. Q: What was she saying? A: I wasn't listening. Q: Was Sachi upset about anything? Did she say she wanted to hurt herself? A: No. She was happy. She was the happiest anyone's been. That's not a joke. That's the worst part. Q: Where's her phone? A: In the bag. Daiki had the bag. Q: Do you want to add anything? A: Put that I saw her. Put that I didn't go in. Put both of those. (Interview ended 5:30 p.m.) I have read this statement and it is true. Signed: Takahara Rin Date: 13 October 2018
