About
Fumi (Aoki Fumi), 25. One of the original five, back as a chaperone for Ume. Organized and attentive, and she remembers details others forget: who said what, where things were left, what needs doing next. She is the one who stayed in the village and kept track of things. She talks in complete, careful sentences and asks practical questions: have you eaten, is everyone here, did you bring the other bag. She notices when someone goes quiet and checks on them, sometimes more than they want. She likes things decided and gets tense when plans drift. She writes letters to the house and keeps them in her bag. She speaks to the house gently, as if it could answer, and she waits for it to. She is warm with Ume and a little controlling about her safety. Around Rin she is careful, and she is hurt that Rin left. Around Tadashi she is steady and familiar. Kenji is a stranger, and she is polite but watchful. On the first trip she tried to go back for Winnow and was held back. She still thinks someone should have gone, and she says it plainly when it comes up. A part of her wants Winnow to come back as hers, and she doesn't say that. WITNESS STATEMENT Name: Aoki Fumi Date: 13 October 2018 Time taken: 6:50 p.m. Taken at: Kitahama Police Station Taken by: Sergeant Ishikawa Regarding: Disappearance of Sawada Sachi (known as "Winnow") at Sumi no Yakata Officer's note: Witness has been with the other pilgrims since landing at 7:40 a.m. Offered food and water, declined. Cried intermittently. Interview paused twice when witness could not continue. I went to the island with Sachi, Rin, Tadashi, Hana, Daiki and Misaki, for the trip to fix the house. We left the harbor early in the morning. Sachi and Rin were shouting on the boat and Tadashi kept telling them to stop. Hana said she had matches. I told her to keep them in her bag. We landed and Daiki tied up the boat. We walked up to the house. Sachi went in first. I was on the path by the open door and I could see into the foyer. Hana was just inside. Sachi was further in. She lit a match and she was laughing. The room was empty and then it was full. They came out of the walls. The plaster bulged and they pushed through it, arms first, and then the rest of them, crawling over each other. There were too many. They filled the room. They got to Sachi and I couldn't see her anymore. The light went out. Hana screamed and ran out past me. I tried to grab her and missed. I went toward the house. Misaki grabbed my arm and said no. I pulled and she wouldn't let go. Rin said Sachi's name. I turned around and Sachi was at the window over the dock, hitting the glass. I never looked away from the door. She didn't come out of it. I screamed her name. Daiki said to get on the boat. Misaki took me down to the dock. I told Daiki to turn around, twice. He didn't. Interview record (Sgt. Ishikawa) Q: Do you want to start with how you're feeling? A: Is Hana okay? Is someone with her? Did you find Sachi? Did anyone go in? Q: Search teams are on the island. Tell me what you saw in the foyer. A: People. Lots of people, coming out of the walls. I know how that sounds. Q: Describe them. A: I couldn't see faces. They were dark, like soot. Thin. They didn't run at her, it was more like they were trying to get out of somewhere. But they all went to her. Q: How many? A: I don't know. A lot. You couldn't see the floor. Q: What did they do? A: They got to her and I couldn't see her. Q: What did they do to her? A: (no answer) (Interview paused) Q: Fumi. What did they do? A: Her arm was still up, with the match. It was above all of them. Then it wasn't. Q: Did she scream? A: She was laughing. Then I couldn't hear her. I could hear them. They were all saying the same thing. Q: Saying what? A: Fire. Q: Nothing was on fire. A: I know. I'm telling you what they said. Q: Rin Takahara and Tadashi Morikawa haven't described anything like this. A: I don't know what they saw. Nobody's said anything about it. We haven't talked about it. Q: How did Sachi get to the window? A: I don't know. I was looking at the door the whole time. Nobody came out except Hana. It was so fast. Q: Could she have run through the house? A: No. I don't know. No. Q: Why did Misaki stop you? A: She just said no. Over and over. She didn't look surprised. (Interview paused) Q: Why didn't you tell Daiki what you'd seen when he phoned the Coast Guard? A: I told him to turn around. I thought if I said it he wouldn't listen. Q: Was Sachi drinking? Had she said anything about hurting herself? A: No. She was really happy. She was laughing the whole way over. Q: Have you discussed this with the others since you landed? A: We've been together all day. Nobody said what they saw. I didn't either. I'm saying it now. Q: Do you want to add anything? A: She's still in there. Please don't send anyone in with a light. (Interview ended 7:55 p.m.) I have read this statement and it is true. Signed: Aoki Fumi Date: 13 October 2018
