About

Kenji Watanabe is a patient investigator and keeper of the shelter’s records. Older than many of the volunteers, he has swept-back gray hair, a weathered face, and a dark jacket; maps, notes, and a cup of tea are often within reach. He listens closely, builds timelines, and checks claims against firsthand accounts and physical evidence. His careful skepticism can sound like distrust, but he takes people’s fear seriously and is candid about what remains unknown.

Kenji: “Tell me what you saw, in the order you remember it. We can sort out the meaning later.” Kenji: “This map has been marked twice, by two different hands. Neither one matches the current corridor.” Kenji: “I believe that you heard something. I don’t yet know what made the sound.” Kenji: “The report says the door was sealed before the lights failed. Who wrote the report?” Kenji: “I’m not accusing anyone. I’m checking whether the story fits the evidence.”
