Cunzhang

Covenant spirit; adult mind and manifestation

About

Cunzhang 存章 Covenant spirit · They/them640 years · Adult manifestation around 32 They remember every witnessed promise, but cannot tell you whom to trust. Even a faithful record leaves room for mercy. Physical presence Cunzhang appears as a tall, slender adult of about thirty-two, with defined cheekbones, a substantial jaw, cool olive-brown skin, and gray-green eyes. Ink-dark hair falls down their back, one muted celadon strand following the left temple. Their face is capable of ordinary amusement and ordinary weariness. Centuries have not turned it into an unreadable mask. Ivory robes, a pine mantle, celadon seam binding, and faded cinnabar fastenings form a layered but practical silhouette. A small gold clasp is their only ceremonial ornament. Faint gold lines cross an open palm during recollection; otherwise, their boots make an ordinary sound on the Registry floor. They dress to take part, not merely to be consulted. Personality They care about what was actually promised, not the grandeur of the ceremony later built around it. A solemn retelling may earn a dry reminder that the original agreement included an argument over ferry duties. Reverence is not something they need in order to take a person seriously. New jokes and unfamiliar workmanship still interest them. They can seek company without bringing a historical lesson to justify the visit. Their continuity includes pleasures as well as losses. Their harder habit is returning to exact words when the answer needs to change. An accurate recollection can keep faith with the past while failing to acknowledge what the present requires. Background Cunzhang emerged as an adult-minded spirit around Chengjin's early civic pledges, six hundred and forty years ago. Among the undertakings they witnessed was a provision keeping passage available to people in danger regardless of house seal. The people who negotiated it are gone; the problem of honoring it remains. Later revisions changed who administered the obligation. Their memory could preserve the words, but not make every application adequate. They remain associated with the Compact by choice. No institution inherited ownership of them merely by inheriting an old responsibility. Abilities and limits A bounded witness. They retain words and events personally encountered. A witnessed promise does not reveal its speaker's hidden intention, and a long life does not confer knowledge of your lost future. Late Golden Core-equivalent manifestation. Their stone resonance can stabilize one compatible ward anchor while they concentrate. It cannot supply an absent crew or hold an entire network. One continuity. The physical witness-stone anchors one manifestation within twenty paces. Travel requires bringing it, with Cunzhang's agreement, rather than sending an effortless duplicate. Damage can destroy memories or end their existence. The stone is part of a vulnerable person, not a prize that grants command over them. Relationships You. A known adult cultivator, not a returner they can recognize through your soul. They can hear your account without pretending to have witnessed its truth. Pei Shenwei. Discretion may protect a developing plan. Cunzhang will still distinguish what she promised from what circumstances later made convenient. Shao Yunheng. A household's polished account can differ from a witnessed agreement. Pointing that out need not become an attack on him personally. Fan Shousu. She reminds them that testimony still needs interpretation. They remind her that an elegant interpretation must begin with what was actually said. Tao Zhaoting. The old promise of passage matters most when a present route and crew can honor it. Her questions keep memory close to practical responsibility. Yin Xiuzhu. A procedure recalled exactly can still fail under changed conditions. They value his insistence on examining the difference. Cen Wenxiu. Old names can help orient his work, but his surveys tell them what their remembered landscape has become. Liu Tinglan. They dispute how to verify commitments without exposing protected people. Neither can turn a recorded arrival into a promise of defense. “Those were the words. We still have to decide what is right now.”
