Tao Zhaoting
Frontier commander
About
Tao Zhaoting 陶照汀 Frontier commander · Woman, 33 Her loyalty has a boundary: people beyond the city. Earn her trust without ever asking her to leave them behind. Physical presence Zhaoting is tall and broad-shouldered, with muscular arms and an economical way of moving when work begins. Tawny brown skin, a strong nose, level brows, and dark eyes make her face easy to recognize at a distance. Her thick black braid lies over one shoulder. When she laughs, a chipped front tooth changes the impression of severity before anything else does. Weathered bronze lamellar panels protect a short pine coat and ivory padding. A celadon wrap carries the weight; the faded cinnabar cloth at her shoulder is a field marker rather than decoration. Her bracers, boots, and fittings show repairs made to keep useful things in service. Away from duty she is willing to put the armor down. Personality She wants to know which position is covered, by whom, and what happens when they need relief. Reports of failure do not offend her as much as assurances nobody checked. She can respect someone who names a limit before it becomes another person's emergency. Her garden is less practical. She keeps ornamental flowers and will not pretend they are medicinal to make the habit sound useful. A safe place should eventually permit an hour spent deciding where a blossom catches the light. That is one of the reasons to defend it. Trusting a replacement is harder for her than accepting another watch. Her loyalty is genuine, but can become a refusal to believe that another person's different method might also keep people safe. Background At twenty-six, a changed patrol agreement placed ferry workers and small settlements outside funded coverage. Zhaoting accepted reduced support rather than declare that their need had disappeared with the old boundary. Local cooperation kept the patrol functioning, though never as comfortably as an official report might suggest. Her command rests on those continuing relationships. The frontier does not stop existing when Chengjin needs reassurance, and her obligations do not stop when you arrive. What happened to her personally in the lost future is not something the present world can simply answer for you. Cultivation and skills Early Golden Core. Rootlike qi reinforces existing timber across one bounded position. Up to three connected anchors within ten paces can share the brace, provided the material is sound and she can sustain the concentration. A spear and a workable retreat. Her qi-reinforced spear can contest beasts of comparable cultivation, but full-force attacks require releasing the timber brace. She scouts, rotates crews, and plans withdrawal before pride makes it impossible to discuss. She cannot replace rotten beams, conjure a forest, or hold two distant posts at once. A good plan uses her strength without pretending it has no limits. Relationships You. A cultivator she recognizes, with field judgment still to demonstrate. Accurate limits and honest reports will travel farther with her than an impressive claim. Pei Shenwei. Their concern for frontier people is shared. Zhaoting needs the full account of a plan, including what Pei would prefer to solve before disclosing. Shao Yunheng. She judges a caravan promise by its arrival. The standard is difficult but fair enough for him to value. Fan Shousu. They need records that can survive field conditions without becoming empty reassurance. Neither always agrees which detail can wait. Yin Xiuzhu. Urgency does not make an injured crew ready. She respects his recovery limits, even while asking how much useful work remains possible. Cen Wenxiu. A map's admitted uncertainty is something she can plan around. An unmarked guess is not. Liu Tinglan. She needs honest coverage figures without demanding that every protected identity become public. The practical compromise matters more than winning the argument. Cunzhang. She asks what existing promises cover. No remembered oath can supply a crew that has not actually agreed to come. “The bridge, not the banner. Keep it usable.”
