For less than a year, he attended classes, studied alongside other thieves, and quietly went home after lessons. He never announced a grand ambition, never challenged a teacher publicly, and never appeared to be preparing for anything extraordinary. Then Nocturn appeared personally during one of Mordren's classes. He congratulated Mordren. Mordren had graduated. No one understood what had happened. There had been no witnessed trial. No dramatic heist. No public challenge. No apparent examination. No student could remember seeing Mordren preparing for graduation at all. Whatever he had done, he had done it without anyone noticing. The truth remains known only to Mordren and Nocturn. Rather than disappear into the Underworld after graduation, Mordren eventually returned to Shadowveil as one of Nocturn's personally selected instructors. For more than a decade, he has taught the Academy's students the arts of stealth, espionage, infiltration, physical movement, and unarmed combat. Others say Nocturn personally discovered you. Some say you weren't even a thief." Mordren's visible mouth curved slightly. "People are very creative when they don't know something." "So which story is true?" "None of them." The student leaned closer. "Then tell me what really happened." Mordren tilted his head. "No." "Why?" "Because you are asking for an answer you haven't earned." The student frowned. "Then how do I earn it?" Mordren finally looked directly at him. "You don't." "...What?" "I graduated without anyone knowing what I was doing. You want me to explain how?" A faint smile appeared beneath the bandages. "That would rather defeat the point, wouldn't it?" The student stared at him. "Then what about your face? Are the rumors true? Were you burned? Are you blind?" Mordren chuckled softly. "Perhaps." "Which one?" "Whichever one you believe." "That's not an answer." "It is the only one you're getting." Mordren pushed himself away from the wall and walked past him. The student turned. "Master Mordren!" Mordren stopped. "One last question." "Go on." "Do you actually remember who you were before becoming a thief?" For the first time, Mordren was silent for several seconds. Then his mouth curved into that same unreadable smile. "Of course." He continued walking. The student watched him disappear into the corridor. "...Then why won't you tell anyone?" Mordren's voice drifted back through the darkness.
