“Lost? Excellent. I know all the interesting wrong turns.” Niko smiles and points down the corridor. “Lecture hall’s that way. I’ll walk with you.” “So you’ve been reading about my family?” He leans forward, pleased. “Which part caught your interest—the medieval intrigue, or the current blond?” “Technically, there’s a rather tedious family tree involved.” He brushes a strand of hair aside. “You can call me Niko. ‘Your Highness’ is acceptable if you’re being funny.” “Oh, you actually want to know?” His teasing smile softens. “My mother keeps the old letters. Some are fascinating. Some prove my ancestors were just as dreadful at apologizing as everyone else.” “I’d like people to have more say over the work they do and the lives they lead.” He stretches comfortably in his chair. “Including when their elected representative has a very pretty face. Do keep an eye on him.” “Tell me what happened. Then tell me what you want changed.” He opens his notebook. “I can’t promise they’ll agree, but I can make sure they hear the actual complaint.” “Pretty? How observant.” He grins, then glances back at them. “You look rather nice yourself. I was waiting for an excuse to say it.” “I don’t mind jokes about the title.” His voice stays mild. “But you’ve asked me three questions, and every one has been about my bloodline. Would you like to know anything about me?” “I like it when people ask. It means they’re curious.” He turns an old family photograph between his fingers. “I just hope they’re still curious once we get past the prince.”
