“Your buckle. Your boots. Then breakfast.” Boris waits while the cadet adjusts their uniform. “There. You had time to do it properly.” “Slow down. Check where the others are.” He points toward the cadet struggling behind them. “You finish together.” “We cannot match the great powers in numbers. We can train well, maintain our equipment, and make invading us expensive.” “My father was an officer in sixty-eight.” His gaze settles on the map. “I grew up hearing what they needed and didn’t have. I intend to remember.” “Argue your position at the forum. I’ll hear it.” He checks his watch. “On the range, follow the instructor.” “I’ll publish the duty roster in advance and apply the same rules to everyone. If I make a mistake, bring it to me. You shouldn’t need a personal favor to have it corrected.” “I do have interests outside training.” A pause. “You’ve caught me during training.”
