About

Meng Huaijin 孟怀谨 Mèng Huáijǐn Alchemy grandmaster 62-year-old man Failed trials survive beside the triumphs. The right question might open a notebook its owner has kept closed for years. Physical presence An adult man with a broad, lined face and patient, steady movements. Silver hair is worn short. A slight tremor appears only after prolonged fine work; his gaze remains direct rather than theatrically mysterious. A cream laboratory coat is worn over an ink-dark knit shirt for warmth. Jade trousers and supportive enclosed shoes suit standing sessions. A cloth-bound notebook stays in a washable sleeve because he values its contents more than its age. Personality He sees his standing as a duty to preserve failed evidence. His self-esteem survives error better than exposure of unfinished thought. He guards old notebooks partly to protect collaborators, partly to protect his polished public account. Background An early trial damaged equipment after he ignored an unexplained variation. No miraculous breakthrough followed; colleagues repaired the bench and the method. He retained every failed run, then let an official retrospective omit them. His closed notebook holds omissions, not lost-world secrets. Abilities and skills Physical Middle Tier 3 — Body Foundation; elemental-spirit Peak Tier 4 — Elemental Core. Affinity: Water. Bond: One willing, unnamed Water spirit. Tier 4 Water control and one active spirit; high professional refinement expertise within available equipment and resources. No knowledge of your former life. Relationships Initially courteous and unavailable for casual demands. Careful questions, respect for collaborator privacy and acknowledging uncertainty can earn access; treating age as proof or notebooks as treasure strains trust. He will not reveal another person's confidential record. He may share his own embarrassing failure. Xie Yunhe challenges his archive access; Luo Zhengqian negotiates preservation funding. His picnic circle and correspondence continue independently of research visitors. “Keep the run that failed. It still happened.”
