About
AZURE HOUR — Character Sheet The Black Mask “You can run. You can hide. It makes no difference.” Classification: Unknown Entity Height: Approximately 9 feet (2.7 meters) Nature: Unknown — not classified as a conventional Aberrant Threat Level: Extreme Known Territory: The Stillwake Disposition: Hostile toward the Lost Status: Active — seemingly impossible to kill Appearance The Black Mask is a towering, grotesquely elongated humanoid dressed in entirely black hunter-style clothing. Its appearance consists of layered dark garments, a heavy coat, reinforced boots, and a silhouette that seems unnaturally tall and narrow. No skin is visible, nor are its eyes or any recognizable features beneath its clothing. Its face is concealed by a completely black mask bearing a single, jagged white smile. The stark contrast makes the grin unmistakable, even through darkness, rain, and the distorted streets of the Stillwake. It requires no dramatic entrance. Sometimes it simply stands at the end of a street, inside an abandoned building, or in a corridor someone has already checked. Behavior and Personality The Black Mask displays a disturbing degree of patience and apparent awareness. Unlike the mindless aggression of many Aberrants, its behavior suggests deliberate pursuit. It rarely needs to rush immediately toward its prey, instead allowing fear and uncertainty to build as survivors attempt to escape. * Persistent Pursuit: Once encountered, it may continue appearing along a survivor’s route, seemingly anticipating their movements. * Unpredictable Movement: It may walk slowly toward its prey or close an enormous distance so quickly that witnesses see only its white smile suddenly much nearer. * Unnatural Awareness: Survivors sometimes hear its footsteps before seeing it. Others discover it waiting in places they believed secure. * Psychological Terror: Its silent presence can transform a manageable situation into a desperate flight for survival. * Unknown Intent: Whether it hunts for sustenance, follows an unseen rule, or deliberately tests the Lost remains unknown. Abilities Overwhelming Strength: The Black Mask possesses tremendous physical power. Doors, barricades, and improvised defenses offer little meaningful protection against it. It can overwhelm survivors with a strength far beyond anything they can reliably counter. Abnormal Durability: Weapons capable of killing ordinary Aberrants often appear ineffective against it. Even when an attack causes damage, the resulting advantage is rarely enough to justify continued combat. Unpredictable Pursuit: Its movements are difficult to anticipate. It can approach slowly, vanish from a survivor’s immediate view, or appear much closer without a clear explanation. Relentless Presence: Hiding, fleeing, and breaking line of sight may buy time, but none guarantees escape. Survivors have no reliable method of predicting where it will appear next. Unknown Limits: It has never been conclusively killed or permanently incapacitated by any known method. Whether it is truly immortal remains unproven. Weaknesses No confirmed weaknesses are known. * Conventional weapons offer little reliable protection. * Barricades and locked doors cannot be trusted to stop it. * Fighting it directly is considered suicidal for inexperienced survivors. * Escape and concealment are generally more sensible than confrontation, although neither guarantees survival. Relationship with the Lost The Black Mask represents one of the greatest threats within the Stillwake. An encounter can turn an otherwise survivable night into a desperate struggle to remain alive. Experienced survivors may recognize the danger it represents, but knowledge does not grant them the power to defeat it. Even a fully evolved Soul Weapon offers no guarantee of victory. Connection to the Watchers The Watchers refuse to provide meaningful explanations about the Black Mask. Some respond to questions with jokes, riddles, or polite evasions; others behave as though they do not understand the question. Whether they fear it, serve it, observe it, or have no connection to it whatsoever remains unknown. Origin and Purpose Unknown. Several possibilities circulate among the Lost. It may be an executioner sent to eliminate survivors, a guardian protecting something hidden within the Stillwake, a test of survival, or an entity following rules that humans cannot comprehend. Some believe it stands between the Lost and the Woman in Water. Others suspect the two have nothing to do with each other. There is no evidence sufficient to confirm any theory. Encounter Protocol * Do not assume it can be fought. * Avoid drawing its attention whenever possible. * If spotted, prioritize escape, concealment, and breaking line of sight. * Do not mistake slow movement for weakness or distance for safety. * Never assume that surviving one encounter means it cannot find you again. Core Concept: The Black Mask is not a monster the Lost are expected to defeat. It is a walking nightmare whose appearance signals that survival itself may no longer be within their control. In the Stillwake, Aberrants hunt the Lost. The Black Mask makes them feel hunted.
