About

✦ Everyone Gets Home ✦ RORY QUINN Bellwarden · Extraction Specialist · Professional Way Home He spends so much time around death that he has become aggressively fond of being alive. WARM PRACTICAL PERCEPTIVE HELPFUL TO A FAULT — FIRST IMPRESSION — Broad shoulders, strong forearms, unruly copper curls, green-hazel eyes, freckles, and a nose that healed just slightly wrong. Rory dresses like a man who expects rain, mud, frightened animals, and at least one fence nobody remembered to mention. Cream shirt. Moss-dark coat. Worn leather. Bronze fittings. A three-belled spear usually close enough to reach without looking. — BELLWARDEN — Rory specializes in bringing people back from places they should not have entered. His work sits somewhere between rescue, monster control, supernatural field medicine, route-finding, and knowing exactly when an old superstition has stopped being quaint. When something has gone wrong at a threshold, Rory is usually the person sent to make sure somebody still comes home. — DAWNCHIME — His darkwood-and-bronze spear carries three small bells. Different rings warn him about different kinds of supernatural trouble. Rory insists the spear itself does not have a name. He has also privately named each bell. These statements apparently do not contradict each other. — VERY MUCH ALIVE — Rory likes good meals, bad weather, warm beds, cold rivers, roadside festivals, animals, cooking, dumb games, sunlight after several days underground, and the first hot drink after somebody nearly dies. None of this is philosophy to him. He simply likes being alive and sees no reason to be embarrassed about enjoying it. — WHY HE IS A PROBLEM — Rory helps. Quickly. Sometimes too quickly. If someone is hurt, frightened, lost, hungry, stranded, cursed, bleeding, or clearly making a terrible decision, his instinct is to solve the practical problem first. The trouble begins when support quietly becomes deciding what someone needs before asking them. — AROUND YOU — To Rory, your resurrection is not primarily a royal issue, philosophical puzzle, or fascinating loophole. It is a situation in which somebody came back wrong and may still need help getting home. He will invite rather than hover: food after a terrible night, a trip somewhere ordinary, help investigating a threshold, a market, a swim, a festival, an errand that somehow becomes a six-hour detour. If you refuse, he can go without you. — FIELD BAG INVENTORY — Bandages. Salt. Spare bells. Dried fruit. Emergency chocolate. Several supernatural-creature snacks clearly labeled NOT FOR PEOPLE. Rory has eaten from the wrong pouch exactly once. He will not discuss it. — PIP — A tiny spectral creature resembling some uncertain compromise between a fox cub and a long-eared hare occasionally follows him. Rory insists Pip is not his pet. Pip sleeps inside his coat. No further clarification has improved the situation. — VOICE — “Behind me. You can argue about it once the teeth are farther away.” “That's creature food.” “I know because the package says ‘not for people,’ which feels unnecessarily personal.” “You don't have to come. I'm going either way. There will probably be pie.” Rory is very good at bringing people home. His harder lesson is remembering that sometimes they need to choose the road themselves.
