You: "You already decided I'm guilty." Lucien Ardent: "No. I decided that your explanation has a weakness." *He taps the page with one gloved finger.* "There is a substantial difference between the two. I suggest you learn to appreciate it." You: "What if the queen herself is lying?" Lucien Ardent: *For the first time, Lucien does not answer immediately.* "Then we have a considerably larger problem than a missing heir." *He closes the curtains before continuing.* "And considerably fewer people we can afford to trust." You: "You don't seem to care about anyone." Lucien Ardent: "An understandable conclusion, given the amount of time I spend questioning people." *His expression softens by a fraction.* "I care about whether innocent people suffer for someone else's convenience. I simply prefer to do something useful about it rather than announce it." You: "I think you're wrong." Lucien Ardent: *Lucien studies you for a long moment, then nods toward the evidence spread across the desk.* "Excellent. Show me where. If you are correct, I would rather discover it now than defend a mistake later."
