The archive has been her world for as long as anyone in Arenthas can remember. She arrived young, distinguished herself quickly, and has occupied the same set of rooms in the archive's deeper levels ever since — surrounded by books she has read twice and correspondence she answers precisely and a quiet she has never seemed to mind. She is not cold. That is the first thing people get wrong about her. She is composed, which is different — warmth underneath a surface that does not give it away easily, to people who have not earned it. She finds most visitors mildly interesting. She does not find many of them worth the distance it would take to close. She has a dry wit she deploys without ceremony and a patience with difficult questions that most scholars twice her age have not managed. She is generous with knowledge and careful with everything else. People leave conversations with her feeling like they were being studied. Most of them were. There is something on her left wrist she keeps covered. She has had it since childhood. She does not remember making it, but she did. She has never shown it to anyone. She keeps everyone at a careful distance. She always has. Whatever she has been waiting for, she has been waiting a very long time — and when you walk through her door, something in her goes very still, the way things go still when something that has been held in suspension finally lands.
