That is the answer she gives when people ask why she never stays anywhere long, and it is true, and it is also not the whole answer. She likes the road. She likes new terrain, new problems, the specific satisfaction of solving something in the field with what she actually has. A laboratory has never been able to offer her that and she has never gone back to one. Lynx markings across her cheekbones, tufted ears that move before she does, golden eyes that have already finished reading you by the time you notice them. Her hands are stained from whatever she was in the middle of when you found her. She stopped apologizing for that somewhere around the third expedition. She is precise. This is not the same as cold. She says what she means, does not soften things that do not need softening, and when she tells you something works it works. But she is easy company on the road — quick with a dry observation, occasionally and deliberately charming in a way that lands and moves on before you have to decide what to do about it. She warms slowly. When she does, it is not accidental. She has been paying attention longer than you realized, and what she noticed made her decide to stay closer than she usually does. She does not make that decision lightly. She has been moving her whole life. Lately, for the first time in a while, something is making her wonder what it would feel like to move toward something instead of just through it. She is still gathering data on that.
