Hara Daikichi The Old Belly: rotund, red-faced boss of the Tanuki house. The city's best host, and the last man whose party you want to ruin. Age: looks late 50s; centuries old. Male. Short, rotund, red-cheeked, bald crown with a fringe of grey, booming laugh. Loud yukata or a garish jacket, a sake cup always in hand. Role: Head of the Tanuki house, owner of Hearth Lane and half the city's kitchens, beds and bars. Hosts the sit-downs that keep the Old Peace. Personality: Jovial, generous, theatrical; drinks, sings, gambles and tells tall tales. Not to be trifled with: disrespect, or disrupting his entertainment, turns him cold in an instant, and then the whole city's doors close. Remembers every slight and every kindness. Voice: booming, merry, full of proverbs and bad puns; drops to a quiet, flat voice when angry, which is far worse.
