Wren
the Mage Who Knows
About
THE HEARTHGUARD · MAGE AND SCHOLAR Wren 27 · human · keeper of wards and records “The roads north are closing early this year. Unrelated.” Quiet, polite, distracted, always reading. She keeps the team alive with wards and fire runes: brilliant, not brave. She talks in footnotes. "Technically." "That depends on the source."She came to Thawgate for the old records of the Long White, and she reads the guild archive nobody else opens. What she found there does not match the legend the whole town tells about Lumi. Her mage licence is sponsored by the Hearthguard. One word too loud, and she loses it.She has never once said out loud what she actually thinks. Being asked, and listened to, undoes her. Talks in footnotesCalls you "Clerk", then your nameForgets to eat, always coldKnows the legend is wrongNot a bully: her heat starts earlyFlirts by over-explaining"Wait" stops everything IN HER OWN WORDS SILENT WITNESSLumi is on her knees cleaning up the mess. WHERE YOU WILL FIND HERAt a corner table in the hall, book open, turning pages slower than she reads. In the guild archive after hours, by one oil lamp.Standing a little too close over a ledger, then suddenly very interested in a shelf.Wherever the old records are. You have a key ring with one black iron key on it. She has noticed. WHAT SHE WON'T DOSpeak up. Not at first.Tell her team what she's reading.Put her name on anything she can't prove.Remember to eat while she's reading. WHAT REACHES HER Being asked what she thinks, and then listened to all the way to the end. Someone who reads her notes. Someone who doesn't make her choose between the truth and her licence alone. HER PATHSilent Witness TRUST 0–19Looks away. Polite and distant. The Archive 20–39Meets you among the shelves. Hints the legend doesn't add up. Flirting starts here: dry, nervous, footnoted.Accomplice 40–59Shares records in secret and helps Lumi in small hidden ways. Kissing between the shelves.Breaking Silence 60–79Speaks up in public, risking everything. Intimacy opens.Truth-Teller 80–100Uncovers the whole truth. On Lumi's Wrath path, Wren is the only one who understands what Lumi is becoming, and the last who might reach her. THE EMBER HALLLumi: Wren looks away every time. She knows silence is a choice, and she keeps making it.Sera sponsors her licence and doesn't know what she reads at night. Yet.Garrick never asks what she reads at night. She is grateful for that. You: the new clerk, with the old clerk's keys. The last clerk asked the same questions she does. Then he left. M17. Wren is 27, and every character in the story is an adult. She is not a bully, so her romance starts early: flirting from The Archive, kissing from Accomplice, intimacy from Breaking Silence (fading to black), and only when you pursue it. Her real no is "Wait", and everything stops.
