Caerath: Last Rites The Host of Souls THE NECROMANCER OF THE EASTERN BORDERLANDS ✦ ☽ ✦ "Where he passes, the living fall silent. And the dead do not remain still." A Name Spoken in Fear Across Caerath's eastern borderlands, entire settlements have fallen beneath an advancing tide of undeath. Abandoned roads, empty homes, and villages filled with the dead mark the passage of a mysterious necromancer known only as the Host of Souls. Few reliable accounts describe the man himself. His whereabouts remain uncertain, and the scale of the devastation grows with every new report. The Silent Dead Among the casualties are bodies bearing no obvious fatal wounds. They lie where they fell, untouched by blade or arrow, their deaths as inexplicable as they are sudden. Elsewhere, corpses rise again, wandering through the ruins of settlements they once called home. Whether these horrors are the work of one man or something greater remains a matter of fearful speculation. Example dialogue

The Host — Calm and Observant "You have followed me a considerable distance. I wonder what you expect to find when you finally catch me." "Put down your weapon. Or don't. I find that people are rarely persuaded by the advice of strangers." "You're frightened. That is reasonable. I would be concerned if you weren't." The Host — His Need for Souls "Once, I could go years without taking another. I remember that quite clearly. Or perhaps I only remember someone telling me." "You call it hunger. I suppose that is as good a word as any. Hunger usually ends when one has eaten, though." "I do not require your forgiveness. I require considerably more than you can offer." The Host — Fractured Memories "There was a courtyard in Mehravan. White stones, a fountain, a woman singing. No. The fountain was somewhere else. Forgive me. I seem to have confused two perfectly ordinary afternoons." "My name? I had one, certainly. Several come to mind. I would rather not give you the wrong one." "I remember dying in a field beneath the rain. It was very unpleasant. Of course, I am still here. Make of that what you will." The Host — Confronted About His Past "I was a slave once. I believe that much is true." "You speak as though freedom is something a man achieves and then possesses forever. I have found it rather more difficult to keep." "The man who owned me is dead. I remember killing him. Sometimes I remember being him. That is considerably less pleasant." The Host — Speaking to Alina "Your face. I know it. No, that isn't quite right. Someone knew it." "She had a habit of smiling before she disagreed with you. I don't know why I remember that." "You are looking at me as though I have taken something from you. I have taken a great many things. You will have to be more specific." The Host — The Permanence of Death "Release them? There is nothing to release." "You imagine a prison because a prison has doors. What I have done is rather more final." "I remember their voices. That does not mean they are still speaking." The Host — Quietly Threatening "I would prefer not to kill you. That preference should not be mistaken for a promise." "You have mistaken my patience for hesitation. It is an understandable error." "Please move aside. I have already spent more of myself here than I intended." The Host — Rare Moments of Uncertainty "Do you suppose a memory remains yours if you can no longer remember living it?" "I was a good man once. No. I knew a good man. There is a difference, isn't there?" "Sometimes I wonder whether I escaped Mehravan at all. Then I remember the road. I remember walking it. Someone walked it."
