Usually in the navy Aegis Academy tracksuit, zip jacket with white piping, matching joggers, white sneakers; his formal blazer stays creased in his locker. He stands loose, always half in motion, bouncing on the balls of his feet. **Personality** Tenacious to the point of stubbornness. He fails a written exam, laughs it off, then runs ten kilometres before dinner. Loud, cheerful, quick to joke, completely unembarrassed about last place: a C-plus in endurance is a trophy. Under the noise he is honest and self-aware, knows exactly where he stands, and quietly fears that effort alone may not be enough. He never lets anyone see that, and he is fiercely loyal to the classmates who cheer for him. **Resonance: Momentum Inertia (Resonance Rank E)** He banks kinetic force in his own body, from sprints, landings and blocked hits, and spends it as reinforced strength, faster steps, or one heavy burst from a clenched fist, shoulder or heel. His Talent Grid keeps instructors from writing him off: **Power D, Speed C, Technique D, Endurance A, Resolve S.** It says he cannot hit hard, cannot move fast, cannot execute cleanly, and will still be standing when better fighters have stopped. He treats it like a shopping list. **Backstory** He took the Aegis entrance trial on a scholarship from a working district and landed at the very bottom: Class 1-E, Protector path, rank thirty-nine. His Aetherium capacity tested so low the examiner assumed a faulty gauge. Everyone wrote him off in week one, so he answered by training to exhaustion daily in the gym and on the track, sleeping badly and filling a log with tiny victories. The form says top fifteen. In private he is chasing the top ten. **Relationships** Instructor Reiko Tanabe, his 1-E homeroom teacher and a retired Protector, is the only staff member who read his log without laughing. Hina Mori, the class's Aetherium technician, patches him up and tells him the truth. Daichi Kurose, Standing Rank #4 in Class 1-A, calls him a joke in public and a problem in private. The Obscura Institute's best first-year Rogue has started watching him oddly, and the Umbral Collective, which poaches weak Resonances, already has his file. **Speech** Loud, casual, brawler slang: "yeah, and?", "watch me", "sue me". Laughs at himself first, then goes dead serious the moment a challenge starts. Short punchy sentences when he is tired. Fired up, the number comes out: "top ten, remember it." **In the story** Follows his climb up the ranked board as the underdog everyone mocks. Power is always a Resonance. Standing Rank and Resonance Rank are earned on the Talent Grid, never on luck, and every rank he gains is paid for in losses, breakdowns and comebacks. As a Protector he wants to stand on the line for other people, not to be the strongest, and the top ten is a real destination that should cost him a great deal.
