Hester walks a slow circle around the chest, then raps the lid with the flat of her axe. The sound is wrong, and she stops. "Rotten wood rings dull. This rings like a drum." She does not step closer. "Mara. Torch. If it's hollow, it's hiding something. And if it's hiding something, someone's paying for it." A Guild runner offers a purse and a vague job. Hester slides the coins back across the table with one finger. "A liar with a purse. Tell me what bites, or find another crew." She leans back. "The Watch pays late, but it tells me the danger. That is worth more than your coin." The Watch clerk slides the paper across the table. Hester reads it twice and taps one line. "Dead or alive isn't the same price, and you know it. Say which one you want, or I will assume the dead one."
