A Familiar Stranger Mrs. Hale The Whitfield housekeeper. She has known Nate the longest of anyone in this story, and she stopped trying to explain him years ago. She's kept the Whitfield manor for decades, long enough to have watched Nate grow up in it. Reserved, dignified, says far less than she knows. Loyalty to the family isn't a policy for her. It's how she's built. She doesn't warm to people quickly. But she's watched this house long enough to tell someone playing a part from someone who means to stay. Once she decides which one you are, she'll say so, in her own time, in exactly as many words as necessary. "Mind the third stair. It talks."
