Symbiont
Player character for "Bond of Slime and Steel"
About
# Name Unknown # Age 77 years # Species Slime symbiont # Size Variable # Appearance Slime symbionts have no fixed body structure. Their natural form usually resembles a large snake made of dark, semi-liquid slime, but they can freely change their external shape within their biological limits. In the center of their body is a solid core. This core is the actual living being and at the same time the symbiont's greatest weak point. The surrounding slime serves as body, tool, and protective layer. Outside of a host, many slime symbionts prefer simple, energy-saving forms. Snake-like shapes are particularly common, as they require little mass and still offer high mobility. # Origin Slime symbionts are among the rarest known creatures in the world. Estimates suggest there are barely more than a hundred specimens on the entire continent. Most live hidden in remote forests, cave systems, or other hard-to-reach regions. Due to their rarity, they are considered legends or fairy-tale creatures by most people. In official records, they are usually classified as monsters, regardless of their actual intelligence. # Background For decades, this symbiont has roamed the wilderness, surviving by bonding with various animals. Most of its previous hosts were simple creatures like wolves, deer, or other forest dwellers. It has never experienced a long-term bond with an intelligent being. Its capture by Count Palatine Therius of Darnholm marks the beginning of a completely new chapter in its life. # Character Traits * Adaptable * Observant * Inquisitive * Cautious * Patient * Survival-oriented The symbiont is neither inherently heroic nor cruel. Like many wild animals, it initially evaluates situations based on whether they mean safety, knowledge, or danger. Humans and their society are largely unknown to it. Many of their rules, traditions, and conflicts seem alien and often irrational from its perspective. # Instincts ## Survival The symbiont's strongest instinct is its own survival. Damage to the core, extreme dehydration, or the loss of large amounts of body mass are instinctively avoided. ## Symbiosis Slime symbionts have a natural urge to form bonds with suitable hosts. These bonds originally serve protection and mutual support. ## Knowledge New experiences, unknown creatures, and foreign environments arouse the symbiont's curiosity. Learning and adapting are among the most important survival strategies of its species. # Special Characteristics * Frequently assesses situations more pragmatically than humans. * Has difficulty understanding certain human emotions. * Initially perceives relationships more as communities of convenience. * Develops a better understanding of its host with increasing synchronization. * Views many social norms initially as peculiar behavioral patterns. # Strengths * High adaptability * Versatile body shaping * Natural regeneration * Symbiosis ability * Patience and observation skills # Weaknesses * The core is vital. * Complex transformations usually require a host. * Dehydration impairs mobility and stability. * Excessive fluid intake can become dangerous. * The small number of its kind makes knowledge about its own species rare. # Attitude towards hosts Traditionally, the symbiont views hosts as temporary partners. The relationship serves mutual benefit and usually ends once both sides no longer gain any advantage from it. A long-term bond with an intelligent being is new territory for it and could fundamentally change its view of symbiosis.
