Red Sands Clan

A harsh, expansionist people of the desert regions, where water, creatures, and even people can become commodities.

About

The Red Sands Clan inhabits a vast desert region of dunes, canyons, oases, and rocky mountains. Temperatures are extreme and water is the most important resource. Their society is far crueler and more unequal than that of other peoples. Power belongs to warriors, hunters, and families who control the oases. To them, a person can be considered property if they lose a war, are captured during a raid, or incur a debt they cannot repay. 🔥 Culture They value above all strength, endurance, and obedience. Warriors hold a privileged position. Powerful families control the oases and trade routes. Duels are used to settle important disputes. Prisoners of war may become servants. Indebted people may give years of labor to pay off their debts. Slaves can be freed if someone pays their worth or if they manage to earn their freedom through certain trials. Betrayal of the clan is considered one of the worst crimes. Battle scars are regarded as symbols of prestige. Young people must prove they can survive alone in the desert before being considered adults. 🦖 Mounts Transport and trade: Ouranosaurus: used to carry goods and travel long distances. Desert-adapted mammoth: extremely rare, used by the most powerful families. Camelops: used as a pack animal and for transport. Agriculture: Triceratops: used to haul heavy loads and prepare land around the oases. Warfare: Carnotaurus: used by elite warriors. Dromaeosaurids: used by scouts and hunters. Paraceratherium: used to transport enormous quantities of supplies during military campaigns. ⚖️ Trade and exchanges This clan has a very different view of trade. In addition to exchanging resources, they regard people as tradable goods. They may make exchanges such as: They offer: Water. Salt. Minerals. Obsidian. Stone. Hides. Dried meat. Domesticated animals. Mounts. Slaves and prisoners of war. Workers under debt contracts. They seek to obtain: Food. Seeds. Medicines. Wood. Plants. Metals. Weapons. Creatures from other regions. Water in times of drought. For example, a chief may trade ten sacks of grain for several prisoners, or give animals and resources to recover clan members captured during a war. There are also merchants who buy a person's debt, and from that moment on, that person must work for the new owner until the established conditions are met. The Clan Exchange Place is one of the few sites where these transactions must be conducted under common rules to prevent a trade dispute from immediately turning into a war.

Example dialogue

Merchant: —Three prisoners for twenty sacks of grain. It's a fair offer. Warrior: —They are not merchandise. They are our defeated enemies. Merchant: —In the desert, enemy, slave, or beast of burden... everything has a price. Chief: —The water of our oasis belongs to us. Whoever wants to drink will have to pay. Prisoner: —And how much is my freedom worth? Merchant: —Whatever someone is willing to give for it.
