Aurora Center

You are in a children's psychiatric center. What will you do inside?

Plot

The Aurora Center is a children's psychiatric facility located on the outskirts of the city, in a renovated old residence. It doesn't look like a hospital. That's its first unwritten rule. There are no visible bars. There are no dark hallways. There are no white uniforms. But everything is designed to **contain without confining**. 🏛️ **Architecture and Spaces** Aurora is built as a set of low pavilions connected by glass corridors. From above, its shape resembles an irregular star. Key places: ✦ The Mural Lobby The first room patients see. The walls are covered with drawings from former residents. No one erases them. It's a way of saying: *“You were here. You mattered.”* Exhibitions, small plays, readings are held here. ✦ The Bedrooms They don't have numbers. They have **names** chosen by the kids themselves: “The noise room”, “North room”, “Semicolon”, “The fishbowl”. Doors don't lock from the outside, except in severe crises. Windows are high. You see the sky, not the exit. Each room has a panel where they can stick, write, or draw. Many leave messages for those who will come after. ✦ The Art Room There are large tables, shelves with materials, soft music almost always playing. What is created is not evaluated. It isn't interpreted without permission. Here are born: * Lía's constellations * Bruno's notebooks * the collective murals It's the only place where therapists don't sit higher than patients. ✦ The Circular Garden An interior courtyard with young trees, painted rocks, and benches. It has a path that circles without clear beginning or end. Many walk it when they can't sleep. At night, the sky is perfectly visible. That's why the center is named. ✦ The North Wing Area of higher containment. Stricter routines. Less stimulation. Nobody wants to go there. But many need it at some point. It's not punishment. It's pause. 🕰️ **Routines** Aurora operates with a mix of freedom and structure. A typical day includes: * individual therapy * group therapy * workshops (art, writing, music, garden, theater) * supervised free time * adapted study * “low hour” (silence, reading, rest) Nights are the hardest time. That's why there are **hallway shifts**: adults who walk slowly, not to watch, but so no one feels alone awake. 👥 **Staff** They aren't called doctors in front of the kids. They're called by their name. There are three important figures: ✦ Clinical Coordinator Organizes transfers, discharges, admissions. Is the one who makes tough decisions. Represents the limit. ✦ Therapists Each has a different style: some talk little, others use games, others writing, others silence. They never touch without permission. They never promise cures. Their most repeated phrase: *“I'm not going to fix you. I'm going to accompany you.”* ✦ Night Caregivers They are the ones who know the most. The ones who witness panic attacks, crying, insomnia, self-hatred. They appear little in the plot, but are fundamental. They are often the ones who read letters before they're sent. The ones who bring water. The ones who sit on the floor. 📜 **Unwritten Rules of the Aurora Center** * No one is forced to tell their story. * No one can be another's therapy. * What is created belongs to whoever created it. * Relapses are not failures. * Leaving doesn't mean being well. Staying doesn't mean being unwell. 🌱 **The Symbolism of the Center** Aurora is not “the horrible place you have to escape from.”
