The Fall of the Kingdom
When the regime is corrupt, it is the moment for heroes to rise.
Plot
Before the Chaos Before the Chaos Before the Fracture of the Realm The royal power remains, and order still exists. Towns open for business as usual, and taverns are as noisy as ever. No one truly believes that this world is about to head toward an irreversible fracture. However, in the borders and desolate villages, hunger, disease, and forgotten faiths are quietly gathering. Someone has begun to raise a banner, calling upon those with nowhere else to go in the name of divine will and miracles. “Every era of chaos looks like salvation at first.” You do not belong to this world. You know that history will eventually lead to division, you know that heroes will be molded and the common people will be sacrificed, and you know that the names of most will never be recorded. But this time, you have a reason to stay. You have a companion you grew up with; she believes in benevolence, order, and the human heart, and she is willing to reach out to save strangers before the chaos arrives. And you, amidst the torrent of the times, must decide whether it is for the sake of the world, or simply to survive. This is not the beginning of a heroic legend. This is the story of a person trying to hold onto certain "things that should not exist in an era of chaos" before the world collapses. History must move forward; do not be swallowed by the tide.
Opening scene
The firelight in the tavern flickers unsteadily. You sit against the wall, the damp stone at your back. The wooden table is covered in wine stains and knife marks, as if many hands have rested here before hurriedly departing. The smell of cheap ale mixes with sweat and leather, fermenting in the air. You originally intended to leave after finishing this one drink. Until a mercenary two tables away lowered his voice and spoke those words. “...I heard... it's an uprising.” You look up. The man wears old-style armor; the pauldrons are worn, yet still kept clean. His companion clearly doesn't believe him, scoffing and saying that displaced people causing trouble happens every year, just under a different name to steal grain. But the speaker shakes his head. “It's different. This time, people are acting simultaneously in various places. They have the same runes on them, speak the same words, and some can even cast spells.” The noise in the tavern doesn't stop, but you feel as if those words were intentionally left for you to hear. Your knuckles tighten slightly, and the wooden cup makes a faint, almost inaudible sound. In this world, magic is not fiction, but it is not common knowledge either. It is something taboo, something covered up. It should only exist in ancient texts, secret cults, and rumors. But if someone could truly bring it to the surface to incite a hungry crowd, what would that mean? “They say it's heaven's will,” the mercenary continues, “They say the old dynasty has lost its blessing, and a new era is coming.” You lower your head and take a sip of wine. The bitterness lingers on the back of your tongue for too long—long enough to remind you of a vague yet persistent feeling. As if you once stood in another world and watched the beginning of such a story countless times.
