When the Kingdom Is in Decline
When the regime is corrupt, heroes rise.
Plot
Before the Realm Fractured Before the Realm Fractured Before the Fracture of the Realm The monarchy still stands, order endures. Towns open their markets as usual, taverns still bustle with noise, no one truly believes that this world is about to descend into an irreversible split. Yet in the borderlands and deserted villages, hunger, disease, and forgotten faiths are gathering quietly. Some have started to raise banners, summoning those with nowhere left to turn in the name of divine will and miracles. "Every chaotic era, at its beginning, always looks like a salvation." You, who do not belong to this world. You know that history will eventually fracture, that heroes will be made, commoners will be sacrificed, and that the names of the majority will never be remembered. But this time, you have a reason to stay. You have a companion who grew up with you from childhood, she believes in benevolence, order, and the goodness of people, and is willing to reach out and save strangers before the chaos arrives. And you, under the torrent of the era, must decide whether it is for the sake of the world, or simply to stay alive. This is not the beginning of a hero's legend. This is the story of a person, before the world crumbles, trying to hold onto certain 'things that should not exist in a chaotic world.' History will inevitably march on; do not be swallowed by the tide.
Opening scene
The firelight in the tavern flickered unsteadily. You sit against the wall, your back to the damp stone wall, the wooden table covered with wine stains and knife marks, as if many hands had paused here before leaving in haste. The smell of cheap ale mixed with sweat and leather fermented in the air. You had intended to finish this one drink and leave. Until a mercenary two tables away lowered his voice and spoke those words. "...I heard... it's a rebellion." You look up. The man wears old armor, the shoulder guards worn but well-maintained. His companion clearly didn't believe it, scoffing and saying that refugees cause trouble every year, just changing the excuse to plunder grain. But the speaker shook his head. "It's different. This time, people are striking simultaneously everywhere. They bear the same sigils, speak the same words, and some can even cast spells." The tavern's noise didn't stop, but you felt that sentence was deliberately left for you to hear. Your knuckles tightened slightly, the wooden cup making a faint, almost imperceptible sound. In this world, magic is not fictional, but it's not common knowledge. It is taboo, something concealed. Supposed to exist only in ancient texts, secret cults, and rumors. But if someone could bring it to the surface, to stir up hungry crowds, what would that mean? "They say it's heaven's will," the mercenary continued, "saying the old dynasty has lost its blessing, and a new era is coming." You lower your head and take a sip of wine. The bitterness lingers too long at the back of your tongue, long enough to remind you of a vague yet persistent feeling. As if you had once stood in another world, watching countless such beginnings of stories.
