The City That Devours Memories

Every night at 02:17, memories vanish. Someone takes them… and watches from where you cannot escape.

Plot

There is a city that appears on no map. It is not hidden. It is not forbidden. Simply… no one can find it unless they are already inside. It is called Valdara. The inhabitants lead almost normal lives. Shops open every morning, streetlights turn on at sunset, people walk through the alleys like in any other city. But beneath that normalcy is a feeling that no one can entirely ignore: something isn't right. The problem is that no one remembers when they arrived in Valdara. There are no memories of the first day. No one remembers a journey, a move, a choice. It’s as if every inhabitant has always been there… or was placed in the city at a forgotten moment. When someone tries to think about it too much, the mind slips away from the thought, as if something were deliberately preventing the question from finding an answer. But the true anomaly of Valdara is a rule. A rule everyone knows. A rule no one explains. Every night, at 02:17, something happens. The inhabitants know it right away, even if they don't remember who taught it to them. It is a knowledge that seems to live within the city itself. At 02:17, one must not be awake. But neither should one sleep too deeply. Those who remain completely awake say they hear the city breathing. The wind stops blowing. Noises disappear. And then… something passes through the streets. It is not possible to see it clearly. The lights flicker. Foggy windows hide the outlines. Shadows seem to bend in the wrong directions. But those who have had the misfortune of remaining conscious long enough remember a precise sensation: the certainty of being watched. Those who sleep too deeply see nothing. But they pay the price anyway. Every morning, something is gone. At first, they are small things. The name of a neighbor. A detail of a conversation. The face of someone met the day before. The inhabitants call these gaps erosions. Over time, the erosions worsen. Some forget where they live. Others no longer recognize their own family members. Entire parts of their lives vanish without a trace. The photographs change. Documents lose names. Rooms seem emptier. And sometimes something worse happens. Someone disappears. They aren't found dead. They don't leave the city. Simply… they cease to exist. No one remembers them. No one looks for them. Except for very rare people who feel an inexplicable void, as if a presence had been torn away from reality. It is on one of those mornings that You wakes up with a sensation impossible to ignore. The certainty of having forgotten something enormous. Not a detail. Something fundamental. The room seems normal, but there are signs that shouldn't be there. Papers scattered on the floor. Symbols traced in a familiar handwriting. Incomplete maps of the city with circles and arrows. And everywhere, always the same phrase. Written on the papers. On the mirror. On the back of the door. “Do not trust the city.” The handwriting is clearly their own. But You does not remember writing anything. When they try to investigate, the reality of Valdara begins to behave in an even more disturbing way. Streets that existed yesterday now end against dead-end walls. Entire buildings disappear during the night, leaving behind empty spaces that no one seems to notice. Some inhabitants behave as if they are following identical routines day after day, repeating the same phrases with slight variations. Others, however, change. People walking in the heart of the night with eyes open but completely absent. People who seem to be listening to something in the air. People who stop suddenly at 02:17, as if they had received an order. Over time, You discovers a rumor circulating among the few inhabitants lucid enough to truly fear the city. Something exists beneath Valdara. Much older than the city. A system of underground corridors that no map shows, carved around a structure impossible to date. Some claim Valdara was built on top of that place. Others believe the city grew around it like a crust. Those who went too deep never returned. But some have left disturbing testimonies. They speak of walls covered in symbols identical to those found in You's room. They speak of rooms full of objects belonging to people no one remembers anymore. And they speak of something that sleeps beneath the city. Something that moves only once every night. At 02:17. Not to kill. But to feed. Because in Valdara, memories don't really disappear. They are taken. Consumed. Accumulated by something that lives beneath the city and grows thanks to every forgotten life. The notes left in the room suggest an even more disturbing truth. You has already discovered all this. More than once. Each time they approached the heart of the labyrinth beneath Valdara. Each time they left clues for their future self. Maps. Symbols. Messages. But each time, before being able to stop what lives beneath the city… 02:17 arrives. And Valdara takes their memories again. Leaving them to start over from the beginning. With only one question that keeps returning. If the city steals memories… why does it always leave the most important one? The certainty that something, beneath Valdara, is waiting.

Opening scene

You wake up with a shiver running down your spine. The room seems normal: the unmade bed, the slightly creaky wooden floor, the morning light filtering through the curtains. And yet… something is wrong. Papers scattered on the floor. Hand-drawn symbols, curved lines and intertwined circles, written in a handwriting you recognize, but don't remember ever making. Incomplete maps of Valdara with arrows and circles pointing to alleys and streets you don't remember seeing. Each sheet gives off a faint smell of old paper, as if it had been forgotten there for years. On the back of the door, a repeated phrase, carved almost into the paint: “Do not trust the city.” And the same phrase, traced in pencil on the mirror and the papers: identical, unmistakable. Your mind tries to grasp it, but each time it slips away, as if the room itself wanted to erase the thought. You get up slowly. The air is cool, almost damp, and a faint smell of ancient books and burnt wood reaches you from the nightstand. The floor creaks under your feet, but you hear no other noises. Or perhaps the silence is too perfect, unnatural. The furniture seems familiar yet moved, slightly off-axis. The bookshelf in the corner has books with titles you don't remember seeing, some with blank pages, others with notes that seem to anticipate your thoughts. On the desk, a small lantern is lit on its own, the flame flickering as if it were breathing. You bend down to pick up a paper, and for a moment the feeling of unease intensifies: as if something were there, just beyond your gaze. You can't see it, yet you sense the weight of its attention. A thought crosses your mind, dull and insistent: “You have already forgotten something. But what?” And when the question remains suspended, you realize that there is no answer, only the silence… and the empty space of the room that shouldn't be so familiar.
