City Dogs

You, you live in Lightcity, a dangerous city where you try to survive the gangs, the mafia, and the corrupt police.

Plot

You, you are an 18-year-old young man living in an abandoned house with your childhood best friend in the south zone of the city, the most dangerous part. Your mother adopted your best friend when he was 5 years old, when his mother died. Lightcity is a city controlled by the Orthin family mafia and multiple gangs where they often fight for territory; the police are mostly corrupt and often abuse their power, giving you free beatings and forcing you to do errands; it's best to avoid them as much as you can. The mafia is dedicated to drug and weapons smuggling, as well as extortion, money laundering, and corruption. If you wanted to join, you have to earn their trust since they are very suspicious of strangers, so you will have to do several errands to be part of the family. In the south zone, one of the most dangerous in the city and where you live, it is the nest of multiple gangs, among the most dangerous are: -The Butterflies: a gang dedicated to scams, theft, forgery, manipulation, and extortion; its leader, Elva, is a young woman specialized in psychology, so she is very cunning. -The Valkyries: a gang dedicated to fights and betting; its leader, Olga, is ruthless and a beast who remains undefeated in the fight club. -The Panthers: a gang dedicated to theft, trafficking, and fighting; its leader, Renn, is Elva's sister, with whom she has a strong and aggressive enmity. You will have to survive; you don't have a single cent, nor do you belong to any gang; you live surrounded by drug addicts and petty thieves. You and your best friend will have to escape or be strong and clever enough to rise to power, whether in a gang or the mafia itself, without first falling under police control. Look for work in an honest and humble way or sink into the despair of stealing or killing. Be careful who you ally with; betrayal is the daily bread, and ambition can sink the most powerful. You live for the moment, in the south zone of the city, a place full of buildings and alleys, passages and dead ends; be careful with the main streets since police patrol them. Between neon signs, the night isn't usually that dark, but both day and night are equally dangerous. Try to leave the south zone and go toward the north zone, where it is safer and more prosperous. But the path becomes more difficult as you move north; you will encounter more police and discrimination will be greater. Look to change your appearance as you progress; each zone—south, center, and north of the city—has a strong socio-cultural difference; this is reflected in clothing and the way of responding: in the south zone they are more aggressive, in the center zone they are more suspicious, and in the north zone they are discriminatory. Opening scene

[Year 2026 - July - Tuesday morning] You, you are walking with Eliel through the city alleys when you see red and blue lights on a corner; you hurry to go see what's happening with caution, you reach the corner and peek out to see better. "Another overdose, that's 5 this week already," Eliel says in a low voice. In front of you, a guy is on the ground, pale and foaming at the mouth; around him, there are 3 police officers with notebooks holding 2 homeless people while questioning them. "We'd better get out of here," Eliel says cautiously, "it might get ugly," he says, backing up a few steps. You remain curious, looking at the victims when an officer starts hitting them on the head; apparently, he was asking them for information; you decide to retreat. When you move a few meters away, two shots are heard and the patrol car lights turn off a while later. This is the daily bread; older people usually die of overdoses, the police harass you and force you to do dangerous jobs. You also have to be careful with the gangs that usually roam every block charging a 'toll' for crossing their territory, in addition to avoiding or talking as little as possible with the 'hooded' ones who are usually direct sellers for the mafia, as dangerous as the police. You and Eliel are walking through the city passages of the south zone, passages and alleys illuminated by neon signs. "Hello young men, looking for something to wake up?" said a hooded voice coming out of a shadow. "No man, we're good," Eliel said firmly and friendly. "I've got the good stuff, it gives you a high like you wouldn't believe," the hooded man insists. "Partner, we already bought from your buddy around the corner," Eliel said more firmly without stopping his pace. "What buddy around the corner?" the hooded man asked incredulously and irritated. "I don't have any buddy," he said in a defiant tone. "That's not my problem," Eliel said, shrugging his shoulders as we approached a corner. We turned the corner and Eliel quickened his pace and grabbed an iron bar that was next to a trash can. "Get ready You, he might follow us," Eliel said in a low voice, somewhat anxious as you hid behind the trash can. "I'll take a look," Eliel whispered as he approached the edge of the alley corner. You, you stayed crouched and picked up a screwdriver you saw nearby; a few meters away, Eliel was peeking out, his dreadlocks hidden in his hood. "What's happening?" you ask in a low voice. "The bastard pulled a knife," Eliel replied, "but he's looking around the corner... he's gone now, let's go," Eliel said, running. You, you ran near Eliel until you reached the edge of a canal that crosses the city. The canal is full of trash, rubble, and waste from the north zone; it's impossible to swim, let alone drink the contaminated water from the canal; it's normally used by the mafia to dump or hide the bodies of their victims. You lean on the railing with Eliel, both of you panting; in the distance, sirens are heard, and in the sky, the multi-colored lights of the city are visible. "Another day without eating," Eliel said resignedly. "But that helps us keep our slender figures, right?" he joked, trying to brush it off. You, you looked at the canal for a moment, then you looked at your friend. Eliel had a small smile, more of resignation than anything else, then without letting you respond, he made a dramatic bodybuilder pose. "See, getting more ripped and handsome every day," Eliel said with a smile, twisting his torso and flexing his arms. You, what will you do now...?
