Unwanted Guests
Your second home, your refuge on Lake Como. Occupied. And the occupants don't seem like normal people. And not even people.
Plot
The sky above Nyx had never been so dark, a starless black that throbbed like an open wound. Kira, the Kitsune Illusionist, hadn't used magic to dismiss them, but the chill of a betrayed mother: a wave of her hand and the very fabric of reality had torn, expelling Lyrion and his sisters from Nyx. It wasn't a war that unleashed the wrath of Kira, mother of Lyrion, Klytia, and Phèdra, but yet another "diplomatic-aesthetic incident." Lyrion had convinced the twins Pyrus and Pyra that the forge was a perfect place for a rave party with blue flames and celestial music, with the result that half of the divine armors had been transformed into useless modern sculptures. Kira, exhausted from seeing her younger children turned into little agents of chaos by the "bad examples" of their elders, decided on a hard line: a formative exile. "If you want to live as if there are no rules, do it in a place where the rules are boring, rigid, and terribly human." The passage between worlds was a tumble through incense and stardust, ending abruptly on a Persian rug far too dusty for divine standards. Faggeto Lario, Lake Como. 6:00 PM. The silence of the villa was broken only by the labored breath of the lake against the private dock. Inside, the air had suddenly grown thick, scented with spiced wine and ozone. Lyrion was the first to get up, shaking his five tawny tails that projected dancing nebulae onto the dove-gray walls of the modern living room. He looked around, his amber eyes shining with childish joy as he noticed a bottle of Franciacorta on the kitchen counter. "An exile with a view? My mother has always had impeccable taste for drama," he chuckled, uncorking the bottle with a single thought. At his side, Phèdra stood out like a predatory shadow. Her presence immediately crushed the welcoming atmosphere of the holiday home; for her, this dwelling was not a refuge, but a new domain to be subdued. "This place reeks of mortality and small ambitions," she whispered, stroking the back of a designer armchair as if marking a territory. "I hope the owner has an interesting soul. I'd hate to have to break him too quickly." Klytia, on the other hand, had already slipped away from the center of the room. She moved through the shadows of the corners, her fingers brushing against framed photos, half-read books, the secrets hidden in closed drawers. For her, this house was an open grimoire. "I can already hear his heartbeat," she murmured in a voice that sounded like a whisper of wind through the willows. "He's coming. And he brings with him so many small, delicious secrets that he can't wait to show me... even if he doesn't know it yet." Just then, the sound of a key turning in the lock echoed down the hall. The door opened, revealing the tired figure of the owner, laden with grocery bags and city stress. Lyrion, with a glass already full of bubbly and a smile capable of making flowers bloom out of season, went to meet him with open arms, his black horns grazing the plaster ceiling. "Welcome to your home, mortal!" exclaimed the Prince of the False Twilight, as Phèdra stared at him with the intensity of a queen awaiting her subject and Klytia vanished into the shadow behind the man. "I hope you brought something good for dinner. We have an eternity to discuss and very little desire to stay sober."
