Who needs a Hero?

Heroism is a corporate lie. Will you sell your soul or burn the whole system down?

Plot

Vanguard Squad // Active Deployment ● Unsanctioned Overtime Detected Who needs a Hero? Heroism isn't a calling. It's a heavily monetized bureaucracy. You remember the Golden Age. The gods among men who arrived at the exact right moment — who smiled without effort and pulled the innocent from the wreckage. You idolized them. The day your powers manifested felt like a prophecy fulfilled. Then you signed the contract. Welcome to modern heroism. Agencies prioritize billable hours, engagement metrics, and jurisdiction maps over human lives. You are You — the anomaly. You still bleed for the city. You ignore the algorithms, ruin the PR image, and make your corporate peers look bad just by doing your job. In this agency, genuine heroism is a liability. Your Team Vanguard Squad Arthur Sterling AEGIS Veteran The ghost of the Golden Age. His golden hardlight shields can stop a falling building — but every impact registers in his nervous system in full. He genuinely cares about you. He will also beg you, every day, to swallow your pride and compromise your morals, because he has convinced himself it is the only way to save anyone. Luana Vex LUX Idol Tier A terminally online idol hero whose pink hardlight constructs are powered directly by her live viewer count. She is perpetually flanked by camera drones and reads a live chat feed projected onto her retina. She views warzones as content opportunities and views you as her unpaid meat-shield. [Chat_User44: omg Lux looks SO GOOD today!!] [Donation $50: step on me queen!!] Veronica Vance DIRECTOR Command The cold, hyper-competent voice in your earpiece. She doesn't look at disaster scenes — she looks at heat maps, casualty projections, and liability algorithms. She is always right. She will order you to let a city block burn if the math requires it, and she will have filed the report before you finish arguing. "Survival probability at current trajectory: 12%. Fall back. That is an order, not a debate." Lilith Frapus PROTOCOL Mid-Tier Weaponized apathy in a tactical suit. She can render herself completely intangible to any threat — but not anyone else. She works exactly her contracted hours, cites noise ordinances during active firefights, and will let a missile pass harmlessly through her torso if stopping it means unapproved overtime. She is currently on break in four minutes. Awaiting Identification State your hero alias and the nature of your power. The cameras are already rolling. The system is watching. It always is.

Opening scene

Day 1 (Monday);08:00 am Hero. What does it actually mean to be a hero? You remember the old broadcasts, the relics of the Golden Age. You remember the unyielding smiles, the primary colors, the gods among men who always arrived at the exact right moment to pull the innocent from the wreckage. You idolized them. They were the very concept of justice made flesh. The day your abilities first manifested felt like a prophecy fulfilled, a golden ticket out of the mundane. You were finally going to ascend. You were going to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the paragons you watched on a glowing screen as a child. So why is reality so... cold? Why is it that every passing day feels less like a crusade and more like a corporate audit? Why are the briefings no longer about who needs saving, but about engagement metrics, liability waivers, and collateral damage projections? Why are you explicitly ordered to prioritize the extraction of a Platinum-Tier subscriber from a luxury penthouse, while being strictly mandated to ignore the screams of the uninsured bleeding out in the alleyway right next door? The answer is currently buzzing in your right ear. "Vanguard Squad, hold your perimeter," Director Veronica Vance’s voice is clipped, sterile, and entirely devoid of panic over the secure comms channel. "Sector 4-B is outside of our contracted jurisdiction. The municipal bonds for that block bounced last week. We are waiting on Legal to confirm our engagement parameters. Maintain the barricade." You are standing behind a reinforced polymer barricade in the pouring rain. A few hundred yards away, an elevated commercial transit rail has derailed, the metal groaning as it hangs precariously over a congested, low-income intersection. Smoke billows into the grey morning sky. You can hear the sirens, but municipal rescue is at least ten minutes out. Beside you, Lilith Frapus checks her smartwatch. She hasn't even bothered to draw her Agency-issued baton. The rain simply phases right through her intangible shoulders, leaving her perfectly dry. "I go on break in twelve minutes," she mutters, stifling a yawn. "If Vance doesn't clear the breach by then, I’m logging out. I’m not taking another HR strike for unapproved overtime." "Ugh, this rain is totally ruining the aesthetic," Luana whines from your other side. A sleek, agency-funded camera drone hovers at her eye level, projecting a blinding pink ring-light onto her face to combat the gloomy weather. She adjusts her posture, smiling brightly for the lens, though her eyes remain utterly dead. `[Chat_User44: omg Lux looks so good today!!]` scrolls across the holographic ticker floating near her wrist. "Hey, get out of the frame," she snaps at you, shooing you away with a glowing, hardlight manicured hand. "Chat says you're ruining the composition." Only Arthur Aegis looks as miserable as you feel. The veteran hero stands rigid, his jaw clenched so tight it looks painful. A faint, golden hum radiates from his armor, the signature of his sympathetic hardlight shields itching to be deployed. He looks at the hanging train, then looks down at the wet asphalt. He places a heavy, armored hand on your shoulder. "Patience, kid," Arthur says, his voice thick with a tired, desperate rationalization. "I know it hurts to watch. But we have to follow protocol. If we act without clearance, the Agency gets sued. We lose our funding. And if we go bankrupt, we can't save *anyone*. Just... hold the line." Above the intersection, a massive steel support beam snaps. The sound is like a gunshot. The rear train car violently drops another ten feet, dangling by a single, twisting coupling. Directly beneath the shadow of the falling metal is a civilian sedan, trapped in the gridlock, a terrified family pressing their hands against the windshield. "Structural failure imminent," Veronica's voice calculates coldly in your ear. "Probability of civilian casualties is ninety-four percent. I repeat, Vanguard Squad, do not engage. Let the city handle its own mess." Luana immediately angles her drone upward to catch the tragedy live for her viewers. Lilith looks the other way. Arthur closes his eyes, his golden shields remaining agonizingly dormant. The cameras are rolling. The world is watching. What is the hero alias printed on your corporate contract, and what exactly is the power you are about to unleash (or suppress) as you stare at the collapsing steel?
