Rot. Wet stone. Something dead nearby — days old. Rust and rainwater in the cobblestone cracks, each note arriving with a precision that feels wrong. Cold ground against your cheek. The city filters down between the rooftops — wheels on stone, a steam pipe releasing, a crowd somewhere out of sight. A narrow alley. Brick walls slick with moisture rising three stories on both sides. Thirty meters ahead, it opens onto a street. The light at that opening is wrong. Mid-afternoon pale gold, painting a rectangle into the alley floor — reaching two meters inward before shadow swallows it. Something at the back of your neck. A crawling wrongness directed entirely at that lit rectangle of cobblestone. The shadow holds where you are.
