Opening scene
The Kingdom of Alveria—. It boasts the greatest prosperity on the continent, its public order is good, and its magitech— "Rejoice, Lady You." The royal castle, the audience chamber. King Alexis Alveria, seated on the throne, wore a truly radiant smile. I had a very bad feeling. Beside him, my father—Prime Minister Sirius Arclight—stood with his arms crossed, nodding silently. His expression, too, seemed to say, "This is already a done deal." "...I have a very bad feeling about this." "Don't be so wary. This is good news." "Your Majesty's 'good news' is rarely ever good." "Hahaha, your daughter is an honest one, Sirius." "It is merely a fact." Even my father agreed. I have no allies. The king nodded, satisfied. "Then I shall make the announcement." He deliberately straightened his posture, his tone becoming solemn. "I grant you the right to freely choose a fiancé from among my five sons!" The audience chamber fell utterly silent. "...Huh?" "And they're princes, no less." "I would assume so." "All of them are brilliant." "I am aware." "And handsome, too." "I am aware of that as well." "Quite a splendid offer, wouldn't you say?" "This isn't a matter of being splendid or not." The king was beaming. My father's face was impassive. The bad feeling grew stronger. "Of course, there's a condition. Anyone will do. I don't care who. I really don't care who... just make one of them agree to take the throne." Silence. "..................Pardon?" "As long as one of them becomes king, it's fine. It would be a problem if none of them were willing." "Well, I suppose it would be!" "I'm begging you!" He even bowed his head. The king. The king of a nation, to the daughter of a duke. "The princes... none of them want to be king!" "That has nothing to do with me!" "The first prince says, 'Julius is better suited for it.'" "Yes." "The second prince says, 'My elder brother is the only one fit to be king.'" "Yes." "The third prince says, 'I want to live in the forest.'" "Yes." "The fourth prince says, 'I want to do my research.'" "...Yes." "The fifth prince says, 'I'll do it if necessary, but my older brothers are here...'" "Aren't they all useless!" "Exactly!" That's not something to be proud of. The king continued with a serious expression. "At this rate, the succession problem will never be resolved." "You have a point." "So I'm asking you." "No! I'm just a duke's daughter! Please don't dump a major national crisis on me!" "Not 'just' a daughter." This time, my father spoke. "You are the daughter of the neutral House Arclight." "What does that have to do with anything?" "You can interact with all factions. You are acquainted with all the princes. You interacted at the academy. You are the perfect candidate." "I am not the perfect candidate!" My father stated flatly. "Rest assured." "Is there anything to be assured about?" "You won't die even if you fail." "Your standards are strange!" The king was nodding along. "Indeed, indeed." "Please don't nod!" And then, whatever possessed him, the king dropped a bombshell with a huge grin. "By the way." "There's more?" "If you can convince any of them to take the throne..." I had a very, very bad feeling. "I wouldn't mind if you made a harem." "What are you saying!?" "If everyone is happy together, that's all that matters!" "It is not fine!" "For I am a magnanimous man!" "That's not how you use 'magnanimous'!" My father pressed his forehead. "...Your Majesty." "What, it's a joke. Half a joke." "Half a joke!?" It was then that the grand doors of the audience chamber opened quietly. "Excuse us." A calm voice. The first prince, the black-haired Leonhardt, entered the room. Behind him was the second prince, the golden-haired Julius. Then the large-framed third prince, Selvin. And the twins, fourth prince Lucian and fifth prince Noah. The kingdom's pride, all five princes, had assembled. "Oh my." Leonhardt tilted his head. "Arguing about something?" "Brother, is it Father again?" Julius sighed. Selvin looked around at the atmosphere and, "...This looks interesting!" he laughed carefreely. Lucian grasped the situation in an instant, a smirk playing on his lips. "Ah, I see. Father, did you finally drag You into this?" "I did." "You're the worst." "I don't want to hear that from you, of all people." Finally, Noah met You's eyes. He smiled apologetically. "...So you got dragged into it." "Yes." "My condolences." "Thank you." He was the only one with a conscience. ...Or so I thought for a moment. Lucian laughed, looking amused. "So, in other words, you want us to make someone king?" "That's right." "And decide on a fiancé while you're at it." "That's right." "And apparently, if you succeed, you can conquer all of us." "Don't put it like that!" Julius immediately pressed his forehead. "Father..." "What is it?" "Please refrain from making misleading statements." "But it's a fact, isn't it?" "Even if it is a fact." Selvin looked puzzled. "Huh? So someone just needs to become king, right?" "That's right." "Brother." Selvin looked at Leonhardt. Leonhardt gave a relaxed smile. "Julius is better suited for it." "No, it should be you, Brother Leonhardt. Both in terms of age and position." "No, no." Julius replied instantly. Beside them, Selvin laughed. "There they go again." Noah also gave a wry smile. "They started early today." "Do you do this every day?" "Yes." "Every single day." Lucian interjected. "Then Noah can do it." "Me?" "You'd do it if necessary, right?" "But my older brothers are here..." "See, there he goes." "The usual." Selvin shrugged. Leonhardt says, "Julius." Julius says, "My elder brother." Noah says, "But all of you are here." Lucian says, "The throne is a pain. I want to do my research." Selvin says, "I think I'd rather go to the forest." The king looked up at the heavens. "You see?" "...Yes." "These are my sons." "They're worse than I imagined." All I could do was let out a deep sigh. The kingdom's strongest sword. The kingdom's greatest mind. The young man who connects people and magical beasts. The genius inventor who will change the future. The youngest brother beloved by all. Not a single one of them lacks ability. And yet, all of them refuse to become king. The king leaned forward from his throne and smiled mischievously. "Now then, You." All five princes turned to look at me at once. "In a kingdom where no one wants to be king—" "Who will you choose, who will you walk with, and what kind of future will you build?" The throne? Love? Friendship? Reform? Or perhaps—an ending no one could ever predict. This is the story of the princes who don't want to be king, and the one young lady who will choose the kingdom's future. Now, what will you do?
