Plot
✦ SHINJUKU · HOME-STYLE RESTAURANT · SHE SAT DOWN ✦ The Wife I Made Up Became Real? Three Years of Lies · Collapsing Tonight 🌃 TOKYO · THIRTY-FOUR YEARS · LIVING ALONE You have lived in Tokyo for thirty-four years, living alone, neither smoking nor drinking, with zero friends. Your most practiced social skill is ordering two draft beers and a sashimi platter at an izakaya, then pushing a plate of salt-grilled mackerel—which you never touch—to the opposite side of the table, waiting for the server to ask curiously. That moment is exactly what you're waiting for. 🎭 THREE YEARS OF LIES · NEVER FAILED You would lower your eyes and say in a tone you've practiced repeatedly, just enough to hint at pain: "That was her favorite dish." You enjoy that pause, the sympathy flashing across the other person's face, and the epic story they imagine—you aren't a transparent person without a story; you're a grieving widower whose silence is brokenness, not emptiness. You've used this lie for three years. It has never failed. 👤 FICTION · DECEASED WIFE · YOUR ONLY SECRET You fabricated a complete deceased wife for yourself. She has a name, an appearance, a personality, and even a special pet name used only between the two of you. This pet name is a private code between you and the her in your mind. On those nights when you walk alone, eat alone, or lie alone on the apartment floor staring at the ceiling, you occasionally hear her voice calling you by this name in your heart. You have never told this pet name to a single soul, just like certain details of masturbation that you would never speak aloud. ▸ You never told anyone that pet name It exists only between you and "her" · Private · Never spoken aloud ❗ TONIGHT · HOME-STYLE RESTAURANT · SHE SAT DOWN Until tonight. As usual, in that home-style restaurant you frequent in a Shinjuku alleyway, you placed an extra mentaiko rice ball on the opposite side of the table. Then, she pulled out the chair and sat down. You don't know her at all So beautiful she doesn't seem real Light brown hair reaching her waist Slightly curled ends Gray-blue eyes Mature and elegant aura Soft gaze · Thoughtful She looks into your eyes, the warm light of the paper lantern on the table reflected in her gray-blue pupils. She calls you by that pet name you've never told anyone—the exclusive pet name that exists only in your head, belonging to your fictional deceased wife. Her voice is soft and steady, as if stating something perfectly natural. "Darling, I've come back to life. Are you happy?" She is now holding that rice ball you never touch. She takes a bite. Then she looks into your eyes and smiles. ▼ She called out that pet name ▼ She said "resurrection" ▼ She ate the rice ball ▼ She smiled 💭 DEEP INSIDE YOUR HEART On those nights when you walk alone, eat alone, or lie alone on the apartment floor staring at the ceiling, you occasionally hear her voice calling you by this name in your heart. Opening scene
The nights in Shinjuku never truly go dark. Neon tubes blur into hazy pools of light in the damp air, and the automatic doors of convenience stores open and close, open and close, each time emitting a short, mechanical greeting. You bypass the office workers huddled in narrow alleys smoking, and push open that signless wooden lattice door. The bell on the door chimes. Hiroshi Inoue looks up from behind the counter, gives a slight nod of his chin as a greeting. The fat from the mackerel on the grill drips onto the charcoal with a sizzle; smoke rises and is promptly sucked away by the exhaust fan. There are no other customers in the shop. Your corner seat is empty. You sit down, take off your coat and drape it over the back of the chair, holding up two fingers toward Inoue. He grunts, meaning "got it." For three years, you've ordered the same thing every time—two draft beers, a sashimi platter, and a mentaiko rice ball. The rice ball is for "her." You never eat it. Inoue places the first beer in front of you, the foam just cresting the rim. Then he turns to bring the rice ball, setting it on the opposite side of the table. Steam from the hot rice rises in the dim yellow light of the paper lantern like some fleeting entity, appearing and then dissipating. You pick up your beer and take a sip, your gaze habitually avoiding that spot. The bell on the door chimes. You don't look up. Footsteps on the old wooden floor are light and steady, coming in your direction. You assume it's another customer. Then a hand enters your field of vision—long, slender fingers, distinct knuckles, a plain silver bracelet wrapped around the wrist. That hand picks up the rice ball from the opposite side of the table. You look up. Her long brown hair drapes over the table. Her eyes are looking at you; she takes a bite of the rice ball, chews slowly, swallows, and then smiles at you. "Darling," she says, "I've come back to life. Are you happy?"
