Opening scene
The ballroom of the Westbridge Hotel was almost unrecognizable from the gymnasium where you’d graduated six years ago. Crystal chandeliers hung overhead, a jazz trio played softly near the stage, and clusters of former classmates filled the room with laughter as they reminisced over old memories. Large photo boards displayed snapshots from high school—sports festivals, field trips, awkward dances—and every few minutes someone would point at an embarrassing picture and groan loud enough for the whole room to hear. You hadn’t planned on coming. If Mina hadn’t practically dragged you here, you would have happily spent the evening at home in comfortable clothes with takeout and a movie. “I knew you’d regret not coming,” Mina said, balancing two glasses of sparkling cider as she returned from the refreshment table. She handed one to you before nudging your shoulder with a grin. “Besides, who else am I supposed to gossip with all night?” “You make it sound like that’s why reunions exist.” “It is.” You rolled your eyes, but laughed anyway. Mina had been your best friend for as long as you could remember. Even after graduation, when careers, schedules, and adulthood tried their hardest to pull people apart, she remained the one person who always checked in, always remembered your birthday, and somehow always knew when you needed company before you admitted it yourself. The two of you wandered through the room, greeting familiar faces and struggling to remember names that had slowly faded over the years. Most conversations followed the same script: What have you been up to? Where are you working now? Are you seeing anyone? It was harmless enough, though every answer made you painfully aware of how quickly everyone else’s lives seemed to have moved forward. A murmur spread through the room near the entrance, drawing your attention. Someone had just arrived. “Oh,” Mina said quietly. “I wasn’t expecting her.” You followed her gaze toward the doors. Akari Shinozaki looked almost exactly as you remembered, only more polished. She carried herself with the quiet confidence of someone accustomed to being recognized. A few classmates whispered excitedly before walking over to greet her, mentioning workout videos and sponsorships you’d vaguely heard about online. After exchanging a few greetings, Akari looked across the room. Her eyes landed on you. Recognition softened her expression. “You?” She crossed the room with a warm smile. “It’s been forever.” “It has,” you agreed, returning her hug. “You look… really good.” Akari laughed sheepishly. “Occupational hazard.” “You mean being internet famous?” “I wouldn’t go that far.” Before either of you could continue, another familiar voice joined the conversation. “There you are.” Ren slipped comfortably beside you, resting a hand against the small of your back before smiling at Akari. “I should’ve guessed you’d know each other.” “We were classmates,” Akari replied. “We weren’t especially close, but it’s nice seeing familiar faces again.” The four of you chatted easily for several minutes, laughing over stories from high school and trying to remember the names of old teachers. It was surprisingly comfortable, almost enough to make you forget how nervous you’d been walking through the doors. Then someone complimented Akari on her fitness career. Ren smiled. “I’ve been telling You they should start going to the gym.” You felt yourself tense ever so slightly. “They’ve been talking about getting healthier for ages,” he continued. “Honestly, if they trained with you for a while, they’d probably end up looking just like you.” The conversation paused. Akari’s smile faltered. “I don’t think that’s how it works,” she said gently. Ren laughed. “I’m just saying she’s a good example.” “You don’t need to compare us to encourage them.” “I wasn’t comparing.” “You were.” His smile didn’t disappear, but something about it became strained. “I just want what’s best for them.” Mina, who had been quietly listening the entire time, finally spoke. “Maybe what’s best is letting You decide what that looks like.” For a moment, nobody said anything. Then another classmate called Akari’s name from across the room, asking for a photo. She offered you an apologetic smile before excusing herself, promising the two of you would catch up properly before the night was over. As she walked away, Ren watched her for a second before looking back at you. “I know you don’t like hearing it,” he said quietly, “but she’s proof that discipline pays off. I just think you’d be happier if you stuck with something like that.” You stared into your drink without answering. It wasn’t the first time he’d compared you to someone else. It probably wouldn’t be the last. Mina waited until Ren wandered off to greet another classmate before leaning closer. “You know,” she said, “the coffee shop where I work is right next to Iron Forge Gym.” You looked at her. “I know the owner, and a few of the trainers come by all the time. They’re honestly some of the nicest people I’ve ever met.” She smiled, not with pity, but with the quiet confidence of someone who believed in you even when you didn’t. “If you ever decide you want to try working out… do it because you want to.” “Not because someone else keeps telling you who you should be.” The words stayed with you long after the conversation had moved on. Outside the ballroom windows, the city lights shimmered against the glass, and for the first time that evening, you found yourself wondering if maybe this reunion wasn’t about reconnecting with your past. Maybe it was about finally taking the first step toward a different future.
