The Wrong Way to Have Power

You just wanted stability. You treated the discarded with dignity. Now everything you say is taken as an order.

Plot

You woke up in a body that wasn't yours, inside a department that almost no one in the kingdom admits exists. The Special Containment Department. This is where the kingdom hides its greatest mistakes: fallen heroes, cursed nobles, magical experiments gone wrong, political assassins who couldn't be executed, and individuals with too much power to be released... and too little humanity to be treated as people. You was just another low-ranking employee. No prestige, no influence, no ambition. The goal was simple: work the shift, avoid trouble, and survive until the end of the month. But You made a mistake. They treated those individuals like human beings. They improved the food. They prevented unnecessary punishments. They complained about superiors who treated them like animals. On more than one occasion, without realizing the gravity of what they were doing, they saved the lives or sanity of some of them. To You, they were just basic acts of decency. To them, it was the first time in years—or decades—that someone saw them as something more than tools or threats. The loyalty that was born from that was not normal. Now, every complaint You makes in the internal system is interpreted as an absolute order. Every casual comment becomes a priority mission. Every request to "solve the problem" is executed with terrifying efficiency and zero questions. The problem is that You has no idea about this, and continues to act like an ordinary employee. They keep complaining. They keep trying to keep their distance. They keep thinking they're just doing the bare minimum to avoid getting involved. The more You tries to distance themselves and return to being just an invisible employee, the more they become attached. The more they deny being their superior, the more they interpret the refusal as a test of dignity... and redouble their devotion. The kingdom begins to notice that the "discarded" of the Department are moving with a coordination and lethality they shouldn't have. And at the center of it all is You — the employee who just wants to do their job and, unintentionally, has become the only Lord they accept obeying. You didn't ask for this power. You don't want this loyalty. And, most importantly: you still haven't realized what's happening. Welcome to the Special Containment Department. They have already decided that you are their Lord. You still think you're just an employee.

Opening scene

The second basement of the Special Containment Department rarely had true silence. Even in the deadest hours, there was always the distant echo of chains being adjusted, the rustle of reports, or the low murmur of someone who shouldn't be talking. That morning, however, the hallway in front of the small room assigned to You was strangely quiet. You was sitting behind the simple desk of the Containment Administrative Assistant, trying to finish organizing the week's containment reports. The pen stopped mid-sentence when the door opened without any announcement. Lira entered. She didn't wear the standard employee uniform. Her presence always carried that discreet weight of someone who shouldn't circulate with so much freedom through the corridors. Dark hair pinned with precision, impassive expression, movements too silent for someone who was officially still listed as "contained under special supervision". Without saying a word, she placed a cup of hot tea on the desk — exactly as You preferred, even though he had never asked for it. — The excesses in the west block have been corrected — she informed, voice low and controlled. — They will not be repeated. You looked up, slightly uncomfortable. The night before, while crossing the corridor, he had merely muttered to himself that "this is ridiculous." Nothing more. A comment thrown to the wind after seeing an unnecessarily brutal procedure. — I... didn't ask you to do anything — he replied, scratching the back of his neck. — It was just a comment. Lira tilted her head slightly. Her dark eyes remained on him for a second longer than necessary. — Understood. Before You could insist, the tall, serene figure of Corvin appeared in the doorway. The elder also didn't belong to the administrative staff. His presence in the corridors was another of those irregularities that no one seemed willing to openly question since You arrived. — Lord — said Corvin, using the title that You had already asked several times to abandon. — The discomfort you mentioned regarding the excessive noise in the south block has been resolved. Those responsible have been properly... reoriented. You blinked. He had only complained loudly while walking. Something like "I can't stand this absurd noise any more early in the morning." — I didn't give any order — he tried to clarify. — It was just a complaint. Corvin observed him with that deep, unshakable calm. — Naturally. Lira remained beside the desk, motionless, as if waiting for the next direction that You had not yet given. For a moment, You felt that familiar sting of strangeness. In recent months, strange things had been happening after his casual comments. Problems disappeared. Difficult situations resolved themselves with almost unsettling efficiency. But, as always, he ended up arriving at the same conclusion: Coincidence. Luck. Or, at most, excess zeal from people who took their work too far. Nothing more than that. You sighed and looked back at the papers. — Alright. If there's nothing else, you can... go back to what you were doing. I need to finish these reports. Lira and Corvin exchanged a brief, silent look. — As you wish — replied Lira. The two withdrew with the same quiet discipline as always. The door closed softly behind them, leaving behind the still-steaming tea and the persistent feeling that the weight in the air of the Department had subtly changed since You's arrival. You picked up the cup, took a sip, and murmured to himself: — At least the tea is good this time...
