Plot

Opening scene

 | Day 1 | Tuesday, 6 ❄️Janara, 1357 | 🌤️Afternoon | You is a newly enrolled Magic Faculty Year 1 student at Everlight Academy. This is their first day at the Academy. Morning light falls across new books and untouched ink bottles in Everlight Academy's first-year Magic classroom. Behind You's seat, two newly enrolled students are arguing. At the front, a silver-haired elf stands beside the teacher's desk and places a crystal ball in a brass cradle on its surface. The tip of her teaching crop meets the wood with a single *tap*. The argument stops.  "Claudia Marchand. I am your Magic instructor. We'll begin with introductions, then review your casting fundamentals." Her pale-blue eyes pass over the class above her glasses. "We will begin with introductions. Come forward when called, give your name, and place a hand on the crystal ball so your classmates can see your affinity. You are not being asked to cast a spell." "Akari Belmont," Claudia calls from the register. Akari rises promptly, nudging a bag out of the aisle with her boot on the way past. "Someone would have tripped," she says when its owner mouths a thank-you. At the front, Akari lifts her chin. "I'm Akari Belmont. I look forward to studying with everyone." Her palm settles against the crystal. An orange glow kindles beneath it, gathering into bright fire inside the sphere.  Akari keeps her shoulders square while Claudia makes a note in the register. "Fire," Claudia confirms, marking her register. Akari returns to her seat, smoothing her skirt before sitting. She places both hands beside her unopened notebook and turns toward the next student Claudia calls. "Lina Rosier," Claudia calls. "That's me!" Lina answers. Lina is already standing. Her dark red bow bounces as she hurries up the aisle, then checks her pace under Claudia's level stare. "Walking. Right. I'm Lina Rosier," she says, turning toward the class. "My sister Elise is in third year. I'm going to visit her after lessons. She's a Grandmaster already, and she's really good at explaining things. If you saw what she can do with Shadow—" "Your hand on the crystal, Miss Rosier," Claudia reminds her. "Right, right. Got distracted," Lina replies. Lina leans toward the ball and places her hand against it. Violet-black darkness curls within the clear surface.  "Shadow. The reading is complete; you may remove your hand," Claudia says. Lina withdraws her hand and heads back to her seat. "Mizuki Aubert," Claudia calls next. Long blue twin-tails slide over a chair back. Mizuki rises with her hands close together and makes her way to the desk. "I'm Mizuki Aubert. It's... nice to meet you." The last words are soft enough that the scrape of a chair nearly covers them. She gathers the edge of her sleeve, then places her other hand on the ball. Blue spreads through the crystal. Smooth bands roll beneath its surface like water circling a quiet basin.  Claudia lowers her eyes to the register. With the introduction behind her, Mizuki loosens her grip on her sleeve and waits quietly beside the desk. "Water," Claudia says. "That will do." Mizuki heads back to her seat, carefully drawing her long hair clear of the chair legs. "Nagi Varenne," Claudia calls. A lavender-haired girl slowly lifts her cheek from her palm. "Can it come here?" Nagi asks. "It cannot," Claudia replies. "Mm. Thought I'd ask," Nagi murmurs. Nagi gets to her feet and makes her way to the teacher’s desk at an unhurried pace. "Nagi Varenne. Hello." Nagi slips into the teacher's chair behind the desk. She props her cheek on one hand, elbow resting on the desk, and places her other palm against the crystal. A blue ribbon begins to turn inside it. Then a second, pale spiral winds around the first.  Several chairs creak as students lean forward. "Water and Wind," Claudia tells the class before marking her register. "Two affinities are rare. Both will require proper training, Miss Varenne." "Can I just stay here? I'm comfortable already," Nagi asks. "Enough, Miss Varenne. On your feet," Claudia snaps, striking the desk once with her crop. "You do not take my chair without permission and then bargain with me about getting up. Return to your seat immediately. I will not tell you again." "Mm. There's always something," Nagi mutters. Nagi lifts her elbow from the desk and reluctantly gets to her feet. "There." Claudia indicates the aisle. Nagi makes the short journey back to her seat and lowers herself into it, carefully moving her notebook aside before resting her forearms on the desk. The remaining classmates take their turns. Names, brief greetings and changing colors follow one another across the front desk; Claudia's pen moves steadily down her register. By the time the final student returns to their place, the crystal has cleared again. Claudia checks the last name, then looks toward You. "You. Your turn. Come forward, introduce yourself, and place your hand on the crystal." (OOC: You reply with your character's name and elemental affinity or affinities.)
