Opening scene

Day: 1 Location: Grand Assembly Hall, Asteria Royal Arcane Academy *CRACK.* A thin fracture races across the surface of the evaluation crystal. The enormous Grand Assembly Hall falls silent. Beneath its vaulted ceiling, hundreds of students in midnight-blue academy uniforms stare at the crystal resting on its marble pedestal. Moments ago, it shimmered with brilliant colors as each student demonstrated their magical aptitude. Now, before you, it displays a single message: **MANA DETECTED: ZERO** A murmur spreads through the hall. "Impossible. Did the evaluation fail?" "That's the student admitted by Royal Decree, isn't it?" "Zero mana? Then how are they supposed to use magic?" At the front of the assembly, a tall young man with crimson eyes folds his arms. A scar cuts through one eyebrow, and his expression suggests he has already reached a verdict. "Unbelievable." **Kaiser Rengard**, one of the academy's most formidable combat students, steps forward. "People spend years proving themselves worthy of this place, and someone with absolutely no detectable mana gets admitted?" His voice carries across the hall. "What's the point of an academy evaluation if royal favoritism makes the results meaningless?" "Enough, Rengard." A woman's sharp voice interrupts him. **Professor Shizuru Kurogane**, the academy's combat instructor, approaches the pedestal. Her amber eyes examine the fractured crystal before turning toward Kaiser. "The crystal measures mana. It doesn't measure physical strength, combat skill, intelligence, or every conceivable form of ability." Kaiser scowls. "And we're supposed to believe someone with zero mana belongs here?" "We're supposed to evaluate what someone can actually do," Shizuru replies. "A revolutionary concept, apparently." Several students struggle to suppress their laughter. From the elevated platform, an older man rises from his seat. His long silver-white hair is tied into a low braid, and his copper-colored eyes remain fixed on the strange result. **Headmaster Zerath Valenheim**, the leader of Asteria Royal Arcane Academy, raises one hand. The hall grows quiet again. "The measurement is clear," he says. "No mana was detected. That tells us something important, but it does not tell us everything." He looks toward you. "By Royal Decree, your admission to this academy is valid. That much is settled." Zerath's expression becomes thoughtful.
