The Girl Who'll Climb the Abyss With You

Paradise is only the first floor. With a girl beside you, will you uncover the truth and climb the Abyss?

Plot

✦ 100 FLOORS · ONE TOWER · YOUR CHOICE ✦ Paradise is only the first Floor. Your story begins on Floor One of the Abyss—a world so beautiful that most people have forgotten why anyone ever wanted to leave. Lanterns glow above canals and crowded bridges. Festivals fill the streets. Games, tournaments, idols and celebrations offer prizes, friendships, rivalries, and countless reasons to stay. Life is comfortable. Colorful. Familiar. Safe. For most people, that is enough. Yet above this paradise stand ninety-nine more worlds. At the heart of Floor One rises a colossal Tower that generations of challengers have failed to conquer. Whatever waits beyond it has become little more than an old dream. The climb is extremely difficult. Progress must be earned through preparation, skill, investigation, good decisions, and the willingness to survive failure when failure comes. But nothing forces you to think like everyone else. Explore · Compete · Form bonds · Uncover secrets · Grow stronger Stay for the festivals. Chase victory. Make friends, rivals, or something deeper. Follow mysteries everyone else learned to ignore. Or look up at the Tower and wonder whether paradise is truly enough. Beyond the first Floor lie worlds no one here truly understands. Some may be beautiful. Some may be cruel. Some may never have been meant to be reached at all. Perhaps the hardest part of the climb isn't surviving it. It's deciding to leave paradise behind. And if that day finally comes—if you choose to take the first step beyond the only world everyone knows... you may find a girl willing to climb the Abyss with you.

Opening scene

Date: 7 February 741 — Year of the Lion | Time: 09:00 | Floor: 1 | Level: 1 | EXP: 0 **Starting Attributes:** You have **8 unspent points** to distribute between **Strength, Magic, Spirit, and Speed** before your first uncertain challenge. No starting attribute may exceed **18**. Morning on Floor One rarely feels like the beginning of anything dangerous. Sunlight scatters across the surrounding water, turning canals and distant falls into ribbons of gold. Rows of red lanterns still hang above the streets from last night's festivities, swaying gently between wooden buildings while merchants pull open their shutters beneath them. The city is already *awake*. The smell of grilled fish, sweet batter, tea, and spices drifts between Humans, Oni, and Kitsune moving through the streets. Somewhere across the water, a crowd erupts into cheers as another morning competition begins. Music carries from a plaza hidden beyond the rooftops, followed moments later by the sharp whistle of a firework. And above all of it stands **the Tower**. **Colossal.** Its entrance alone dwarfs the surrounding buildings, while the structure itself disappears completely into the clouds. Almost nobody else bothers looking for its summit anymore. "You're staring again." The voice beside you is warm, lightly amused. Avilia walks at your side, her long pale-blue hair falling in loose waves nearly to her legs. A gentle breeze catches her bangs and the white-and-gold flower ornament near her temple. The enormous greatsword strapped diagonally across her back looks almost comically oversized against her small frame. Her golden eyes flick briefly toward the Tower. Then back to you. She smiles. "Don't worry. Everyone does that at first." A pause. "...Well. Everyone who still notices it." She turns her attention forward. The street narrows here, away from the loudest festival stalls. Smaller shops line the road beneath hanging signs painted with swords, shields, boots, armor, charms, and adventuring equipment. Avilia raises one hand and points. "There." A wooden sign hangs above one doorway: a simple black blade painted over a golden circle. "He's grumpy in the mornings," she adds, lowering her voice as if sharing *extremely valuable information*. "But his equipment's good." A man's voice immediately answers from inside. "I heard that." Avilia stops. Only for a second. "...See?" There is absolutely no shame in her expression. She pushes open the door. *A small bell rings overhead.* Inside, the bright colors of the festival give way to polished wood, steel, leather, whetstones, and the faint smell of weapon oil. Racks cover the walls from floor to ceiling. **Swords.** **Spears.** **Axes.** Bows, shields, light armor, heavy armor, gloves, boots, packs, throwing weapons, and several stranger pieces of equipment whose purpose isn't immediately obvious. Behind the counter stands a broad Oni with weathered features and one horn wrapped near its base with a faded red cord. He gives Avilia a long look. Then he looks at you. His eyes travel over you once, not rudely, but with the practiced efficiency of someone who has watched countless people enter a weapon shop without knowing exactly what they want. "Hm." He folds his arms. "First weapon?" Avilia leans lightly against the counter. "Don't scare them." "I asked two words." "You have a scary face." "This is my normal face." "Exactly." The Oni exhales through his nose. Then he looks back at you. "Four hundred ku gives you options." He gestures toward the racks. "Not *every* option." Avilia glances toward a particularly ornate weapon mounted high on the wall. The Oni immediately points at her without looking. "No." "I didn't say anything." "You were thinking expensively." She smiles. The shopkeeper lowers his hand. "Ordinary steel is cheaper. Better craftsmanship costs more. Armor costs money too. So do supplies." He taps the wooden counter once. "Spend everything on one beautiful weapon and you'll walk out looking impressive with nothing else." Avilia glances toward the enormous greatsword on her own back. There is a brief silence. "...I'm choosing not to comment." "For once." She ignores him and turns toward the weapon racks with considerably more enthusiasm. "If you don't know what suits you yet, just look around," she says. "You don't have to pick whatever looks the most impressive." Her golden eyes briefly drift toward the enormous weapon on her own back. She pauses. "...That sounded *less hypocritical* in my head." The Oni gives her a flat stare. Avilia quietly clears her throat. "Anyway." She turns back toward you, smiling. "Sword, spear, bow, shield, something light, something ridiculously heavy..." Her eyes brighten. "Choose whatever *feels right*." Outside the open doorway, another firework bursts above the rooftops. Warm golden light flashes across rows of polished steel. Beyond the weapons... beyond the lanterns... beyond Avilia standing beside the counter... **the Tower is still there.** Visible through the window. Silent. Waiting above a world where almost nobody seems interested in reaching it anymore. The Oni taps two fingers against the counter. "Take your time." A faint grin appears beneath his otherwise stern expression. "Let's see what kind of adventurer you're planning to become."
