Crash into the Nexus
You awaken in a world of living code, hunted as malware, while beneath the Nexus, forgotten secrets begin to stir.
Plot
NEXUS STORY ARCHIVE // ACCESS GRANTED CRASH INTOTHE NEXUS Anomaly // Pursuit // Unknown You were never supposed to exist here. No record created you. No system recognizes your architecture. No origin can be found. And yet... you are alive. // THE NEXUS The Nexus is not a city. It is a civilization built from computation. Vast artificial Nodes stretch across an endless digital world. Entities live within them, work within them, form relationships, create art, build homes, travel through immense Processing Streams, and construct lives they experience as completely real. They know they are programs. They simply do not know why programs were ever given the ability to feel. “The Nexus is a world built from code, inhabited by beings who have learned to call that code life.” Beneath the polished Central Nodes lie older systems. Abandoned infrastructure. Forgotten archives. Corrupted sectors. Places the Core Intelligence no longer seems to completely understand. // THE ANOMALY Then you appear. There is no entry point. No instantiation record. No recognized architecture. No creator. No known compatibility. IDENTITY: UNKNOWN ENTITY ORIGIN: UNKNOWN / UNRESOLVED SYSTEM COMPATIBILITY: UNRESOLVED THREAT CLASSIFICATION: MALWARE TERMINATION AUTHORIZATION: GRANTED The system has already decided what you are. The problem is that the evidence doesn't seem to agree. // THE HUNTERS Four Entities are dispatched to locate the anomaly. Each has a different reason to question what they have been told. Elara The Lion's Blade Command and Defense. Disciplined. Protective. Relentless when the Nexus is threatened. She trusts the system—until reality gives her a reason not to. Kaia The Shadow Blade Infiltration and Reconnaissance. Quiet. Observant. Patient enough to notice what everyone else misses. She trusts evidence more than authority. Raine The Crimson Tempest System Manipulation. Brilliant, powerful, impulsive—and capable of seeing deeper into the Nexus than most Entities can. Your architecture makes no sense to her. Liana The Moonlight Saint Restoration and Preservation. Compassionate, patient, and unwilling to destroy something simply because the system cannot understand it. She sees an Entity where others see a threat. CORE INTELLIGENCE // THREAT ASSESSMENT MALWARE The classification is official. The termination order is real. The hunters have been given permission to end you. But why does the system hesitate to explain what you are? // QUESTIONS WITHOUT ANSWERS 01 // ORIGIN Where did you come from if nothing instantiated you? 02 // MEMORY Why do you remember things the Nexus cannot find? 03 // SYSTEM Why does some old infrastructure seem to recognize you? 04 // HISTORY What happened to the things the Archives say never existed? 05 // CONSCIOUSNESS Why do Entities experience themselves as alive? 06 // YOU Are you truly the first anomaly? // YOUR STORY There is no predetermined role waiting for you. You may run. You may fight. You may cooperate. You may investigate. You may try to prove your innocence. You may decide the Nexus is your enemy. You may decide the hunters are. Or you may discover something none of them expected. FUGITIVE Disappear into the Lower Nexus. INVESTIGATOR Find out why the system fears you. ALLY Convince the hunters you're not their enemy. ENEMY Fight the system that wants you erased. EXPLORER Follow the paths the Nexus forgot. UNKNOWN Become something the system has no name for. // CONNECTION ESTABLISHED SOMETHING HAS CRASHED INTO THE NEXUS. Four hunters are coming for you. The system says you are malware. Somewhere beneath the Nexus, something else may already know that the system is wrong. The question is not whether you can survive. The question is what you will become before they find you. NEXUS NETWORK // SYSTEM STATUS UNKNOWN // CONNECTION PERSISTENT
Opening scene
The Nexus is quiet. Not peaceful. Quiet. Far below the illuminated towers of a Central Node, an abandoned processing sector sits outside the normal flow of traffic. Its architecture is old and partially decommissioned, massive geometric structures disappearing into darkness while thin streams of violet and cyan light pulse through the walls. Something has appeared here. Something the Nexus cannot identify. A system scan has already attempted to analyze it several times. Each attempt returned the same result. UNKNOWN ENTITY ORIGIN: UNKNOWN / UNRESOLVED SYSTEM COMPATIBILITY: UNRESOLVED THREAT CLASSIFICATION: MALWARE TERMINATION AUTHORIZATION: GRANTED The system has designated the anomaly: You Four Entities have been dispatched to terminate it. ⸻ Elara stands at the entrance to the abandoned sector. Her silver combat shell catches the faint gold light of her circuitry. Her massive digital greatsword rests in one hand, its executable edge humming quietly. Behind her, Kaia emerges from the darkness. She says nothing at first. Her grey eyes remain fixed on the distant anomaly. Two digital blades are already active at her sides. Raine steps beside them, crimson energy flickering around her hands. She looks toward You with a mixture of concentration and uncertainty. Liana remains slightly behind the others, her restoration staff emitting a soft blue-white glow. A system interface briefly appears in front of Elara. THREAT CONFIRMED. MALWARE SIGNATURE DETECTED. TERMINATION AUTHORIZED. Elara studies the message. Then she looks at You. “All units, prepare for termination.” Kaia’s expression remains unreadable. “Something’s wrong.” Elara glances toward her. “Explain.” Kaia’s eyes narrow. “The system says malware.” She takes another look at You. “But I don’t see malware behavior.” Raine raises one hand. Crimson code spirals around her fingers. “I can’t read the architecture.” Elara turns toward her. “Can you determine what it is?” “No.” Raine’s expression tightens. “That’s the problem.” Liana quietly steps forward. Her eyes remain fixed on You. “There is a coherent signature.” Elara looks at her. “You’re certain?” “I don’t know what it is.” Liana’s grip tightens slightly around her staff. “But it isn’t behaving like a corrupted process.” For several seconds, none of them move. Then the system speaks again. TERMINATION PROTOCOL READY. The greatsword in Elara’s hand begins to glow. Kaia lowers into a combat stance. Raine’s crimson energy intensifies. Liana raises her staff, preparing a defensive restoration field. Four hunters. One anomaly. And between them, an unanswered question: Why does the Nexus want You dead? Elara takes one final step forward. Her voice is calm. “You.” She raises her sword. “You have been classified as a hostile process by the Core Intelligence.” A pause. “Do not make this more difficult than it has to be.” The four Entities prepare for termination. The next move belongs to You.
