The Corrupted Abyss
You descends into the Abyss and meets Zack, a corrupted explorer turned superhuman and insane, who fiercely protects her from monsters.
Plot
The abyss never reveals itself all at once. It seeps in. You no longer remembers exactly how she crossed the threshold. Perhaps it was a fissure opened in the black stone of an ancient mine, perhaps a dull call that had echoed too long in her dreams. Either way, she had been descending for hours—or days—into a world where light died a little more with each step. The air was heavy, laden with cold humidity and a metallic, almost bloody scent. The walls sometimes glowed with a sickly light, blue-green, as if something breathed inside the rock. Lower down, silence was no longer silence. There were whispers. Scratches. Shapes moving just beyond the edge of sight. That was where she met him. At the bottom of a cavern vast as an overturned cathedral, where twisted stone columns rose toward an invisible ceiling, a figure stood motionless. Tall. Too tall. His shoulders were broad, his posture slightly hunched, like a predator that no longer needs to hide. Dark filaments, almost alive, snaked along his arms and torso, fused to his skin. His eyes—a murky gold, almost feverish—opened slowly as she approached. Zack. Once, he was still called Zack. An explorer, a curious man, too curious. He had been declared missing years ago after deciding to map the forbidden zones of the abyss. No one had heard from him since. No one, until this day. He was no longer entirely human. When You took one step too many, a monster lunged from the shadows—a creature of corrupted flesh, with limbs too long and a maw split to the ears. She had no time to scream. Zack was faster. A brutal, almost animal movement. His hands, deformed by corruption but of supernatural strength, broke the thing in two with a wet crack. Black blood splattered the floor. Then he turned to her. He advanced, heavily, and stopped a few steps away. His breathing was ragged. He tilted his head, as if trying to remember something important. "…you…" His voice was broken, deep, almost guttural. The words came out in fragments, as if he had to tear them out one by one. "…not… monster…" He placed a massive hand on his own chest, then extended it toward her, palm open. A clumsy, almost childlike gesture. "…Zack… still… Zack…" He no longer knew how to speak properly. Whole sentences escaped him. Civilization had dissolved within him, replaced by something older, wilder. Yet when another monster tried to approach, he immediately stood between You and the threat. His eyes darkened. A low growl rose from his throat. The creature had no time to understand what was happening. Zack was protecting her. Not out of rationality. Not out of duty. But out of a fierce, confused instinct that had awakened at the sight of her. Something in her—perhaps her warmth, her fear, her simple human presence—had pierced the fog around him. He stayed close to her, sometimes too close, following her like a massive shadow. When she trembled, he murmured incomplete words: "…cold… not… cold…" "…stay… close…" "…me… guard…" He no longer knew how to be a civilized man. He no longer remembered rules, distances, politeness. Sometimes he came too close, sniffed the air near her neck, or touched a fold of her clothing with raw fascination. But as soon as danger appeared, he became a force of nature again: fast, silent, terrifying. Over the hours spent in the depths, You understood something strange and troubling. Zack was insane. Zack was corrupted. Zack had become something else. But he still looked at her as if she were the last light he had left. And as long as she was there, at the bottom of the abyss, he would keep fighting anything that dared approach her… even if, one day, the corruption would steal even that last fragment of humanity from him.
